It seems like if ChatGPT had literally any other way to turn a profit, they would have done it before resorting to this. Kind of fees like this is their last ditch effort to show investors that they can somehow become profitable.

Yes in that case there would be no data transmitted, and no risk.

Another example: if the user turns off "Turn on when Windows starts up" or whatever equivalent, this would also be a non-issue.

Is the idea that hackers can review the source for vulnerabilities?

I would imagine any internet-facing application would not have any issues with a source code "leak" like this, as all inter-app communication is based on short-lived credentials.

> Nobody wants a computer. They want what it does.

This is exactly why we have AI assistants in the first place.

The typical person wants the damn phone / computer / tablet out of their life, they just want to say "Siri, make my dentist appointment for 9:30 Monday morning" or "Copilot, find all the pictures of my dad and put them together in a collage for his birthday".

The biggest problem with AI assistants and this thought process in general is that they do not work.

As the article states, if the AI assistants actually did things we wanted, these companies wouldn't need to shove them down our throats so much. We would just... use them.

Agree on it being AI, but what really screamed "AI slop" to me was the emojis. I don't know any tech bloggers who use emojis, but everything that ChatGPT or Gemini generates always has too many emojis.

> public WhatsApp API

There is no public WhatsApp API. You need to sign up for "WhatsApp Business Platform" to be able to use an API to interact with WhatsApp.

If there was a real API for WhatsApp, this probably wouldn't have happened.

I've used [batch editing in GIMP before](https://github.com/alessandrofrancesconi/gimp-plugin-bimp), to resize a folder of images, so the feature is there. Granted it is a plugin, not a built-in feature.

I do agree though, even the revamped UI does not have a great look and feel, but I'm used to it so I don't mind.

> Despite Linux, llvm and Blender proving that open source can beat closed source, GIMP has failed for a very long time.

As a GIMP / Inkscape user who hasn't used photoshop / illustrator, what is so much better about Adobe's offerings?

Consent and convenience. When I use google maps, I am trading my privacy for accurate directions and traffic times. When I buy a car that sells my location, and I get nothing in return, I feel like the deal is inequitable.

I don't know how anyone has enough patience to use Stack Overflow in 2025. Any LLM, even the one in Google Search, will give you a better answer than some stack overflow user that didn't read or understand your question fully.

As a dev currently working at a company where getting an access request fulfilled can sometimes take weeks, I feel this author's pain.

But it seems like an enormous security hole, even with a codeword "password". The author didn't mention it, but I hope they're using whatever version of their company's E2E email encryption is for these messages.

> This suggests that chronically elevated arousal in AnxDs may increase neurometabolic demand for choline compounds without a proportionate increase in brain uptake, leading to reduced tCho levels. Reduced cortical NAA suggests compromised neuronal function in AnxDs. Future studies may clarify the clinical significance of reduced cortical tCho and the possibility that appropriate choline supplementation could have therapeutic benefit in anxiety disorders.

Engineering is all tradeoffs.

For this guy who spent thousands per month on AWS, using AWS makes no sense.

For a guy like me whose AWS bill was 38 cents last month, AWS makes a lot of sense. Currently I have a small KaiOS app with about 1000 unique visitors per month hosted on AWS. I used to self-host on an old laptop, but it costs less money to host on AWS (1 kwh cost me 19.89 cents and my laptop uses about 4.5kwh per month). Not to mention the convenience of not having to restart my server for software updates, or update my own certs every 3 months, or fuddling with nginx configurations.

And my AWS bill ever starts climbing, I will just self host once again.

I'm not an artist but I am decent with the pen tool, and for graphic design stuff I typically use AI art to give me a thing I can trace in illustrator with the pen tool, and fix any errors or imperfections I deem worthy of fixing.

I would imagine this kind of tool would allow someone who is not gifted at art (e.g. how do I translate a 2d sprite I made into a forward facing running animation?) the same kind of thing: a pathway to potentially "trace" the generated image, making it better than the original and removing any undesired aspects.
