nonguix is similar to debian's non-free sources. It's also maintained by many of the same contributors to guix. Enabling it is also similar to how you enable it for Debian. I have never seen anyone blamed or shamed for using nonfree drivers by the guix community, which I can say has been a very warm and welcoming community.

> Instead of a flat directory tree with hashes, a consistent algorithm that categorises apps and puts them in a tree:

> /gonix/apps/gui/productivity/images/krita/5.1/

> /gonix/apps/console/shell/bash/5.2/

> /gonix/apps/programming/compilers/fpc/3.1/

> /gonix/libraries/c/glibc/2.39

> /gonix/apps/console/editors/vim/9.1

This is a nice illustrative example that works well when the only difference between software packages is semantic versions. The reality is that there can be many variants of packages and using something like a hash of package inputs is very practical. Take for example a library called GDAL, which has an insane amount of configure flags. It is quite common for scientific software to be tuned and package maintainers cannot supply a one-size-fits-all solution.

Reminds me of the blog post on Guix HPC, "What's in a Package?" and it was specifically focused on problems with PyTorch and approaches with package managers.

Just a small note, you can't really choose wrong because you can participate across the fediverse, with other "servers", and even non-mastodon federated social media. However if it irks one to join a specific community, there does exist general purpose instances.

This was my main gateway drug into programming. I would love disclose some of the best hacks that I came up with someday! This game was one of the best FPS games ever.

I can confirm this. I'm an American living in Norway and I have had two children. My wife is also American, and we moved to Norway while she was pregnant with our first child. Because my wife had not been working we were not entitled to the normal benefits. Time has passed, and my wife got a job in her career field. We are now expecting a third, and because of covid-19 my wife has been unable to work the required minimum during her pregnancy. So we are looking at having a third child without the normal benefits! From the American perspective this is still great. We get "free" healthcare and a nice lump-sum grant, but I (the father) don't qualify for paternity leave and the lump sum grant is not huge in comparison. The grant is like 1/6th of the amount that most families get with their leave.
