I also read what he writes. But some other things he writes/ tweets about actually interest me more- like art, writing-as-thinking, some interactions with his kids- than his startup related stuff. Some content seems repetitive or maybe I have moved on- for better or for worse- from such content: people in twenties, money-vs-wealth, airbnb, stripe (Collisons), Jessica, users, unrealistic sounding growth can be real, etc.

I tried this idea for the books and gave up. No rules for book purchases.

But for something like netflix, I create a list. And when I start repeating something like Seinfeld, Breaking Bad, etc. rather than not-yet-watched items from the list, I cancel the subscription. And I don't renew till some time passes (6 months). Only then there are a few different movies/ series I can add to the list.

>Software design/architecture is a strange beast

Yes. At one point I thought a set of good programs can be composed into a good architecture. Then at another stage- with agile, etc.- I was thinking about evolutionary architectures.

But experience and dealing with different kind of problems and systems work best. Also, I have seen Conway's law hold when many other patterns, principles fail.

Books like Garlan Shaw are good but help if you have some experience. Some other books/ courses like Neal Ford's help, but for me those helped only to know the terms/ ideas. Practice and rewrites, tech-upgrades helped more. Also, books like Michael Nygard's Release It.

Another aspect besides not recognizing everyone from your company is like this- even if someone knows for sure that a person from a different company is helping themselves to snacks, people are may avoid pointing it out. People may prefer to avoid conflicts or make someone else look bad. They are more likely to act if they see someone stealing from their desk, home, etc. That's kind of their domain.

Also, a few other things may also be there- people won't make noise if someone steals snack packets, but they may make noise if someone steals laptops.

Also, if one person steals it may get pointed out more than if a lot of people steal- where stealing is culture, etc.

At some point I shifted from eclipse to intellij idea. And with other features also loved the Darcula theme.

Was the co-worker called Newman?

I read the last sentence 'And boy, there's a lot of cron jobs running at HP.' in Newman's voice:

From the Seinfeld episode The Diplomat's Club:

"I took over his route. And boy, were there a lot of dogs on that route."
