I found that odd too. I like TikTok, but it’s really nothing like YouTube. TikTok is basically a better Vine.

I’ve been thinking about doing something like that, but would that stop auto-playing videos on news sites? Or are there specific filters for that?

Either way, do you find that the Adblock detection / nags are less reliable when you do it DNS based instead of the client?

Good idea, but I wish there was a less harsh method. I have been using my iPad a lot recently and the thing that bugs me is that it’s almost impossible to listen to Spotify uninterrupted as you use Safari because of auto-playing videos (not just advertisements).

It’s completely obnoxious and there is no way to stop it. Safari takes control of sound even if the video does not have audio toggled on and pauses your Spotify. Then if you use control center to start it again, it plays iTunes. I can’t believe this hasn’t been fixed.

EDIT: Just tried Brave Browser and this is pretty great so far. Seems to be the best compromise. Thanks!

That definitely happens, but I think a lot of the blunders are due to good intentions with poor execution or not enough thought into the need and demand.

Things like adding features to solve a problem, when those problems only affect a small percentage of users, is something I see a lot. Especially in the beginning of a product when you’re not 100% sure what you’re making or who you’re making it for and you want to appease all of your customers so you don’t lose them.

Or the feature added is too complex to be useful for a user without training / tutorials, of which few users will undertake that time investment.

I have yet to be on a team where features were not trying to directly address a customer issue / complaint, but maybe I’ve been lucky.

Yep I’m definitely considering others, not only myself, as best as I can. But I don’t see these things being attractive to even non-technical users. Or not enough of reasons to keep them on the Apple ecosystem. It seems like basically up-sells to me to increase revenue off the existing customer base because they know they cannot keep increasing iPhone sales YoY.

I do think News is probably the best bet. It’s something I’ve wanted for a while because not many people are going to pay 5-10/month for numerous news sources that are often regurgitating the same news. But I doubt it would keep me on Apple. And isn’t this something that could eventually easily be replicated by others?

I disagree with those being sticky. I have a fleet of Apple devices and iMessage and FaceTime are absolutely sticky but they just don’t compare to what Apple introduced at the recent event, which I think was all pretty weak.

I was interested in News, because of the WSJ, but it’s not even the full Journal.

I’m still amazed Apple is not doing anything about robocalls. This is an area where software can improve the situation, and I do believe this is related to privacy.

And instead we get the latest iOS with...more Animoji.

Every single major car company is working on this tech. There is no way they can keep it to themselves. Plus put aside private ownership, those car companies will just become other Uber and Lyft competitors.

Yep, it makes sense. I think this is why it was an easy decision for them. GitHub does not want developers getting cozy with Gitlab/Bitbucket, even for personal projects, because then those developers will start to push the companies they work for towards those same providers.

Yep, exactly, and the lock-in on Azure is much better. It’s near trivial to switch between hosted Git providers.

Integrations/hooks/CI add some stickyness which is probably why places like Gitlab focus on offering CI to be more than simply “git in the cloud.”

I did the exact same thing a few weeks ago.

I did the "disable notifications" for every single app on my phone, with the exception of Messages (which doesn't vibrate or make a sound) and Phone. Oh, and Pagerduty :)

It's a very positive change. Default setup on phones/apps encourages maximum distraction and slot machine functionality.

True, but you leave out the cost and hassle of moving regularly. Most landlords know that people don't want to be relocating each year, so they can slowly increase rent year-over-year.
