I just blocked YouTube using hosts file this week. Haven’t missed it. But no more random time sinks.

I had offloaded YouTube on my phone since the phone is out of storage. Not going back.

like the gardeners these days, did you hype the poison oak only to ask for a big $ amount to remove a small growth haha?

Interesting. Just another reason I'm convinced some of these recent non-fiction is just commentary (almost) making-up/inflating a problem and then providing a "magic" solution. The content isn't nearly as timeless nor broadly true.

The article is a joke. But your "Pay people more, work them less" comment is tipping off people. You must be on to something lol.

> strategies such as joining clubs or pursuing hobbies

I have to go online to find the clubs?

In America, there's consolidation everywhere in search of greater efficiency and profits. From local tennis clubs merging into city-wide organizations managed through an app to monopolies emerging in corporate landscape.

One way to interpret parent kubielid - he is referring to the infinite rat race for diminishing marginal returns.

> all of human history worked

And you are also correct. They probably had a tough life and for those humans, the reward was survival and more. I can only imagine waking up on a cold morning, no running water, stepping out on the fields, using average manual tools. They probably stuck around in groups.

> where I could be one of those people to bring up quotes and concepts, citing back to the original source, with freakish accuracy

If you cannot retrieve a few timeless (to you or in general) quotes/concepts/dialogues and a few trending ones (trending in big or small circles) - there is some amount of info/tasks overload going on.

Also I think we find people who can "bring up quotes and concepts with freakish accuracy" cool for some reasons.

If I cannot/need not re-read a book, I could get rid of it and have more space. Tho the gain feel very tiny compared to the rest of the hoarded stuff.

My guess is food isn't so sterile (lack of probiotic and other micro-life) food in South America, Asia, etc [yet]. Same for water, environment in general. Plus more human to human contact. So effects of antibiotics are constantly being reversed. Plus lactobacillus tablets are literally taken with the antibiotics (tho probably it should be taken a week after a round of antibiotics?).

Whereas some Western countries might have a sterile-ness + formula + meds + other environmental factors that form the perfect storm. Edit: I'm not saying it causes x or y. Just that it is not ideal for a young kid.

The blog author does well to id/categorize the issues. People need a way to quantize+act on the issues - various systems exist for that. Key is to feel progress (on a particular direction/plan or at least in hindsight).

Ideas that track such progress:

--

1-3 high quality decisions per week (credits to Bezos, tho he does 1-3 per day).

--

1-2 important/not-urgent tasks per week.

1-2 small, not-important/(semi-)urgent tasks per day - these are also a form of "toothbrushing" that each adult has to do.

--

Bullet journal works well for both.

Somewhat tangential question, can someone briefly say how mold is related to cancer?

Also isn't mold somewhat common in American homes?

> I'm also trying to teach my kids the idea of files and how everything on the computer are pretty much all files.

Interesting. As a generation that grew up on Windows, that's probably my mental model as well. Keeping specific files like music, videos, photos organized and sharing them on pen-drives was a big thing even 10 years ago - and to an extent, this is completely gone. Can you expand why you want to teach that?

Good idea. Along similar lines, we are thinking the TV also goes to a room. I think the kids use the TV (which is exclusively YouTube these days?) more than us parents (Even the kids do not use the TV that much).

One of the best tools is to be a role model for the kids: let them see what you use the internet for, how you use it, what you avoid and what else you use the phone/computer for. Both parents and if possible the bigger circle around the kids.

Beyond that, I will look for the good replies on this post - I am leaning towards "big hammer" blocking and allowing/curating sites/videos. The Internet is a big place.

I didn't even know duvets were used in hotels. But the OP post did make me think of this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LYJz8tVN7fg

Thanks for sharing. On a tangent...

> I was very adamant on promoting young marriage/childbearing to others. In a perfect world I still think it's a good idea... ... Life is so unique and never goes according to plan ... rushing anything with anyone until they're absolutely sure and have a good plan in place

Among other reasons, social media can suddenly change a person in very unexpected ways at an unexpected pace.

Ppl are more connected to the infinite-scroll than ever before, more than to other ppl around them. It is no longer even our friends we watch and envy - its all "influencer" content.
