It is funny that "the Web" as a platform has become like the mainframe for banks and some big companies.

It is an ubiquitous legacy, a critical infrastructure of our societies and a spaghetti that cost everybody a lot.

In the end it is controlled by the biggest corporations and various interests. Very hard to disrupt and replace.

Young Portuguese have been emigrating for the last 50 years. The country is full of second residences, bought by people who took advantage of cheap real estate until recently. Blaming today's inflation and cost of living on a few digital nomads or crypto people doesn't make much sense.

What also chocked me when visiting Lisbon or Porto is the number of old abandoned buildings in what I would consider nice areas. I have always wondered what was the reason for that...

I'm surprised nobody mentioned nushell already https://www.nushell.sh/book/dataframes.html

I guess supporting high perf dataframes in a shell will make those big data platforms irrelevant for most use cases.

Bottom line today if you can't deliver your app on the web only, you will most likely end up at best with:

- An Electron (Desktop) app

- An React Native Mobile app (that needs to be delivered through both Google & Apple proprietary channels)

Whether you loved or hated Java the language, it is hard to deny we ended up in a terrible place:

- We lost all freedom on mobile

- We rely way too much on Blink & Webkit

- We traded Java for Javascript

- It's still relatively slow

- We haven't fixed the security problem on desktop

- Devs now have to manage a lot more technologies & moving parts

My guess is this a reference to sysplex [0] on mainframe systems, often abbreviated "Plex"

Building a system & owning it is indeed an investment but often you have much more chance to stick to it long term. Apps often come & go, transitioning from one to another can be very expensive. Also if you want to be in control of the security & privacy DIY is the way to go.

I've used & loved Mozilla forever but at some point I am starting to wonder: when you fire 1/3 of your workforce & have obvious mismanagement problems, how can you still guarantee the security of such a complex piece of software?
