Understandably, some of us just don't trust scientists wholesale.

We had experienced serious reductions in carbon utilization in the 2008 recession and COVID restrictions and there wasn't any kind of pull back signal from the temperature record that I can make out. Real global "experiments" that do not back up these extreme positions.

If you really want to make changes it seems to me that the best place to put effort would be pro nuclear rather than cutting industry to the ground. Serious investment in thorium seems a good place to start.

People want questions they have answered instead of ignored. It's like a tone deaf corporation ignoring customer complaints while speaking platitudes about how much they care and how right they are.

It's not apples vs apples. Literally and figuratively. The I/O or board features on PC boards will eat power. So you will end up with a 15-30 W idle vs probably 5-8 for the Mac. I doubt the PCIe on the pro does much to the power unless there is an extra I/O die on system, you need active chips to eat power. That is vs Intel.

AMD will add a bunch more watts to the idle number as their multi CCX CPUs just eat more power at idle. You'll be closer to 30-45 W idle. This is a guess, it's widely acknowledged but not really quantified that I've found.

AMD monolithic dies are more in line with Intel. IE the laptop/mini PC line will be nice and low.

The difference is vastly diminished when you add the display that's using 80 Ws. So that's 85 vs 100 W total system power? 15% difference that gets bigger when you peg your processor.

Apple numbers are better in pretty much every way on power. But we're talking a handful of watts. Even at really high power rates it isn't going to add to up much.

Sources: I have a Mac mini and an Intel raptor lake desktop. I take measurements. And I have read various sources. This is my best information.

Have a purpose. Have an intended audience to fulfill that purpose. Cater to your audience.

Most of those systems sit at idle, when they are on at all. Idle power is not the same as TDP. The idle difference is not so great that it's a big deal.

The reality is that the phone is, and will be, the far more dangerous a vector for porn because of how ubiquitous and convenient it is. The wow factor of this device won't move the needle much here, particularly at this price.

Yes, some will use it for this. Porn use is never satisfied so the addicts that are always looking for bigger hits will find some here. But they are already in it's grasp. Very few to nobody will start it on this device, and that is where the primary battle is located.

Kids, on phones, far away from the supervision of their parents.

> The worst thing about soccer is that no one, outside the ref, really knows how much time is left in the game

This is also kind of a feature. Different kind of suspense. I don't mind it.

> That and flopping in the box to get penalty shots.

I don't like diving, but I can understand it to some extent. The ref misses a lot of the illegal contact.

Grabbing, pushing, pretty much anything you do with your hands to manipulate another player is illegal contact. Shoulder contact is mostly fine and the generally allowed strength and positioning play.

If you have someone doing subtle tactical fouls in the box (very common). The ref will probably miss it because it's hard to see the finer technical contact at 30-40 yards away. Then there's the safety issue. If you're a forward and you get plowed by a defender, it can be quite dangerous. There tends to be a size mismatch favoring the defender.

So exaggerating contact to make sure the ref is aware that it's occurred is a counter to potential defender gamesmanship, or worse.

I've never been able to do it, I keep my feet at even egregious fouls (really good balance) and consequently, despite probably hundreds of fouls in the box, I never get awarded penalties.

But... I still retain a bit of appreciation for the divers as I know what defenders would be like if the threat of it wasn't there.

Another common problem is the huge license keepers are granted with physical contact.

> How is this in any way relevant? Touch stove -> get burned is an immediate and consistent causality chain. See porn -> get divorced is not an immediate response in almost all cases, nor is it even consistent.

It's a metaphor. Somethings can be clearly understood, by individual experience, without needing a body of citations. As clearly as a burn.

You misunderstand the nature of the personal and relationship damage if you think that divorce is the principle issue. It is but a symptom of the unhappiness that is rooted in porn use.

Yes, but it's pretty small compared to men. I'm ignoring the much smaller case for the moment.

Do you really need it spelled out for you? This is a pretty obvious statement.

https://verilymag.com/2017/07/causes-of-divorce-effects-of-w...

https://www.science.org/content/article/divorce-rates-double...

You can find plenty of pro porn propaganda out there too. They want to fill the channels with, at least, uncertainty.

But use your own brain and human experience. Do many women you know celebrate porn use by their husbands/boyfriends? That it doesn't bother them at all?

I don't need a study to tell me a hot stove burns.

It effects your relationship even if you successfully keep it hidden. You can't hide the effects, particularly how you objectify the women about you. It's so common lots of people think this is normal. It's not normal, it's not good, and it causes unhappiness in a woman that wants to be really loved. Her. Not her body. Not that image you saw or that video you watched in your mind while you are with her so you can sustain an erection. Just, her.

But you won't be able to give that to her. We men often natter on about the emotional sensitivities or frailties of women when they complain about things we think we are doing right. But there is something missing and she feels it. This is squelching the voice that is trying to lead you to do better, be better. To be a source of warmth, love and happiness instead of a cold stone that gets off to equally cold sex objects.

> What is the damage?

Where to begin. I'll be as straight forward as I can.

Porn use cultivates lust. A false form of love that seeks easy sexual satisfaction instead of a stable long term committed relationship that's best for kids. Porn is a pretty major contributor to divorce and otherwise blowing up relationships. Some women will tolerate it for a time, or try to and even claim to succeed. But it eats at them and contributes greatly to their unhappiness.

It's another form of infidelity, which is quite infamous in human society since forever. Numerous literature pieces.

It's basically a love receptor inhibitor. The deeper you are in it the harder it will be to really love a woman. A real woman requires TLC, a great deal of it, a porn woman does not. How much energy do you thing goes into a relationship if all male sexual satisfaction is tied solely to it's health?

If you've been in it since youth you probably have never experienced the kind of real love I'm talking about. I know because I was there, myself, for years. I walked a life of porn for many years and it's taken many years to overcome that addiction. Night and day.

Everyone fancies their success, which means more visitors. They want to be able to handle the odd traffic surge. Understandable desires.

But understanding of scaling seems stuck in 2012 when these systems were required for even moderate sites, particularly if slow frameworks are being used. The rise of cloud use is definitely part of this mentality. An ingrained believe that horizontal scaling via vendor is the only way.

But meanwhile, in 2023 where we've seen a 500x bump in what servers are capable of and vertical scaling and it's simplicity can just "get you there" for 99% of sites.

> But that's my point: that's exactly the promise of every single cross-platform system out there.

Every non web cross platform system doesn't have nearly the investment as browsers do for quality and compatibility. It's not even close. Like, orders of magnitude. I don't like the cross platform toolkits either.

Let's not pretend the web as a platform is the same m'kay? People use it every day from all of these devices, like billions of people. This isn't some unknown, where this speculation is reasonable either. There are issues, but it's not equivalent.

Well, vote with your time and money.

PWAs would be cheaper to develop overall than building 2-3 separate code bases. Which would mean more software available generally, particularly from bootstrapped companies.

I don't think anyone is suggesting that native go away.

> I hate ElectronJS

Then you should support PWA as an alternative. It's lighter weight, both lower memory and download size, compared to electron.
