Even if you can get it approved you are adding surface area to your annual security audits, adding another vendor that needs to be disclosed on security assessments, spreading your data to yet another processor, and adding another invoice and budget discussion. Depending on your customer contracts you may need to notify them of a new vendor. This might trigger a new security review. Oh it’s just another model on Bedrock? Bliss.

For what it's worth I genuinely loved your landing page. I casually clicked through and got an immediate unexpected chuckle at the giant animated crab.

It's obviously AI assisted but I interpreted it as a nod to itself on that and really appreciated it.

Feels like lately most of the time is spent arguing about or at least worrying about whether or not AI is going to replace all software developers.

Don't let perfect be the enemy of good.

There's also nothing stopping us from stigmatizing the use of smartphones in public. Even a slight discouragement of it would be progress. It doesn't have to be all or nothing.

I know someone[0] who is working on exactly this right now: https://fossilrepo.io/

I don't think he's got public sign ups turned on yet. Maybe hit him up on the Twitter for more info.

Quietly has not so quietly become an AI slop calling card.

Teams is insane. You want a new entry in a bulleted list? Hit the enter key. If you dare.

I had managed to be on Slack exclusively for at least 10 years. Recent acquisition has me using Teams and it's hilarious to see for the first time what people have been complaining about. I thought surely people are exaggerating. No, no they are not.

It only took a couple weeks for me to figure out that I would have to compose longer messages somewhere else and then paste them into Teams.

Nitpicky, but he’s rounding the edges, not the corners.

And yes, why are they so sharp?

I seem to recall my wife having the plastic MacBook that came out circa 2006 and the edges on that thing were legitimately painful.

I always marvel at how sharp the points are on the notch of the lid on my current MacBook. Very very pointy.

I spend well over that of my employers money on pentesting every year. I’m absolutely certain Claude could perform as good or better a job using what’s available today.

It had crossed my mind that an AI agent pentester would be an interesting product to build. Once again though, the labs are just going to build it because it’s a thin thin wrapper.

Beyond existing software with vulnerabilities, the really important aspect of this for Anthropic et al is that the gigatons of code that are being generated every day needs to be secured.

Yeah, flying my family of 5 to Hawaii using skymiles accrued on my Amex. Totally a scam.

They’re basically interchangeable with cash. I don’t get the issue. The main frustration I have is that I cant buy myself a ticket with cash and then pay skymiles for my child. If they weren’t of an age that they must be on the same reservation it wouldn’t matter. Feels more like a limitation of Delta’s abacus that sits behind their mobile app.

I find walking can be a similar experience. It really crystalized for me this summer while walking the Camino de Santiago because of the effect of exploring another country. When you walk, you see everything. The world is huge. Everything is slower, higher fidelity, and for me, richer. You can spend an entire day walking from one town to another. Think of everything you will see! Compare this to driving. Driving is like compression. You could drive between the same two towns in less than an hour. You may see many beautiful things while driving, but the experience is fleeting and momentary. You will miss so many details along the way.

As always, there are tradeoffs, and you can't walk everywhere or always have these types of mindful experiences. On the other hand, life is short and perhaps paradoxically, slower experiences can yield richer days.

Though I will say, HN is a pretty great source of information about major outages like the recent AWS and Cloudflare issues. I had a moment this morning where I thought, oh, is there a larger issue and then, oh, HN is down, huh, the next option is so far down my list that it's going to take me a moment to think of it.

I hope that serves as a testament to how great this site and the community is. Thanks for all your hard work keeping it that way!

Yes. I once interviewed a developer who’s previous job was maintaining the .NET application that used an Excel sheet as the brain for decisions about where to drill for oil on the sea floor. No one understood what was in the Excel sheet. It was built by a geologist who was long gone. The engineering team understood the inputs and outputs. That’s all they needed to know.

You can buy a sheet of LED blocking stickers on Amazon for a few bucks. I keep some in my suitcase and leave every hotel room a little better than I found it.

You aren’t wrong. Up until a couple of weeks ago it was $299. Once. Forever. That was the whole idea. Very cool that they open sourced it. MIT license too.

This is really amazing to see trending on HN. I spent a couple days in Pontevedra this summer while walking the Camino de Santiago. It was absolutely delightful and what I experienced aligns with the article. The old town was filled with wide streets almost exclusively for walking, cafes and restaurants that sprawled into plazas, and people young and old enjoying the car free public space. It was one of the first stops on our trip through Spain and as an American it was stunning.

In America the contrast is stark. Most of our public spaces prioritize cars instead of people. I’m lucky to live near the beltline in Atlanta. It’s incredible to see how people flock to the beltline for a car free experience. It’s such a rare thing in America. Where it exists you can see that there is tremendous demand for it. Supply on the other hand is unfortunately very difficult to deliver.
