Am I missing something but I always assumed that valuations at this stage of a company is to do with huge/vast sums of money being removed from the table by the founders and they've done this by selling a good stake of their equity/voting rights in their company.

The founders are now rich.. but the company isn't.. and if they raise a next round, their true valuation will shine through...

Looking at a listing[1], I notice that you provide email addresses to users and presumably act like a craiglists for anonymous messaging...

I'm just curious though, don't you find that you get spammed out if you do this?

I think providing email addresses to users on a marketplace is a great way of keeping discussions/messages boxed up in your platform, but showing the emails on the site must result in way too many spam emails?

I've stopped reporting anything these days. The report system isn't there to actually do anything... at least not in the disciplinary sense.

It's there exclusively to make the people who are reporting things feel like they have some solution to things they disagree with.

I recently reported two separate comments on Facebook.

The first comment was on startup investor's profile picture after he announced that he was getting married to his long term boyfriend/partner (about two weaks ago). The polite version of the comment basically went along the lines of saying that he would be "judged by allah" for his sins and should die.

The second person was a friend who commented on a picture of several football supporters and one of the guys had a turban on. The comment said "I see a dirty terrorist".

So I kicked my 'friend' (who was really just an associate anyway) from my list and reported to Facebook...

Both of these reports came back saying that after reviewing they haven't broken any rules...

Apparently the Facebook staff who run the review proceedures are the same folks who leave comments on the cesspool over at YouTube...

That's not how things work... You can't just create some system and see governments flock to you. There are years of consulting and specification requirements.

Linux is open source... Office Libre... Go convince a public office to switch to Ubuntu..

Saving money is often at the bottom of their focus.. and then you have competing interests releasing figures that show it is more costly to switch to free alternatives.

Public spending is a corrupt cycle.

Maybe I missed this bit of information, but can someone explain....

They use a multi datacenter master - slave redis cluster? What's the relationship between the master and slaves?

Are the slaves just failover? Or are they for read only?

How have they configured their writes and reads from their main application? I'm just curious how their application routes the reads/writes in such a multi-database setup. (Are they using DNS for a manual failover?)

Has anyone installed Piwik for multiple accounts?

My product allows users to create and launch their own website. I'd quite like to be able to quickly provide basic statistics for users (alongside Google analytics if they want it).

We run a multi-tenant application so have thousands of sites running from the same codebase, however, each site owner would need it's own statistics. At the moment, we just let users provide their own Google Analytics, but it would be nice to report to Piwik I think and give them their own preconfigured stats area?

Some companies just don't understand how to write acquisition/winding down letters.

"We're excited" should almost never be used in an acquisition post unless the users also have something genuinely to be excited about. ie. Cookies, Balloons and otherwise exciting things!

Instead, what they wrote is:

> We're excited to be acquired, thanks for making this possible, now GTFO our servers in the next three days.

(Also on another note, couldn't you replicate their entire business in a weekend using Docker, vanilla Redis, and the boto python API?)

If you know that you need to be grouping by dates... then it's usually best to store the date fragments in a separate column so you can take advantage of indexes.

The project is pretty cool, but I don't think it's worth adding the dependency lock-in for the functions.

Simply, if you know ahead of time that you want GROUP BY date, then you should create a new column for each interval. `week`, `day`, `hour`.

That way you will have fast queries...

Looks good. You should think about adding Facebook Connect for registrations... especially with how much a lot of people like to announce how motivated they are to look after their health, and after all, "it's a good thing that you told everyone you went to the Gym, otherwise that session would have been totally pointless".

You should also make it clearly what your business model/pricing/fees/plans/what to expect once you sign up. This information is really difficult to discover without subscription.

To a lot of sellers, this is going to be a non-starter... The pricing model of 2.5% per transaction plus paypal/stripe fees, means that in liklihood it will only attract casual users who barely make any sales... The pricing is probably fine for these users, but it's priced well beyond the convenience that it offers for established sellers who might just be thinking, "let's give it a shot".

Marketplaces go for the 4-10% per transaction.. but provide payments and the actual exposure on their marketplace... Shoplocket is just providing a widget to integrate...

So ultimately, I only see these guys as going after the really (emphasis) really, small fishes...

What do you guys all use for email management between a small 2 person team (founder co-founder)? I've seen that one person has already mentioned https://www.helpscout.net/

I've been using Assistly/Desk http://www.desk.com , but find that it's actually a bit overpowering, and adds a lot of support meta-junk to each email that just makes it looks like we're trying to be an enormous company, when in fact, we don't get that many emails, but at the same time, we want to handle each email efficiently and promptly.

This is all really obvious though...

The title and the first 80% of the article is written to allow a casual reader to infer that there is a problem with S3... simply put this isn't the case, and through brute force guessing the researchers were able to find some publicly accessible files containing sensitive information in a bucket... (assuming of course that the bucket owner didn't intend for the bucket to be public in the first place?)

This really isn't restricted or exclusive to just S3 buckets.. if you randomly hit enough web accessibly URLs you'll find confidential/sensitive material else where as well. People might feel slightly more confident or relaxed in what they store on S3, but the author doesn't make any convincing points to suggest this.

The findings are on a par with research such as "eating fatty food causes heart problems", or "exercise is good for you"... or "Amazon S3 service used as intended causes pages to be publicly accessible"...

If the Summly could do research TL;DRs as well, it would be, "S3 buckets set to public are accessible to anyone".

Raising $2-5000 between 5 developers should be a matter of 2-3 days work for the collection bunch...

Have you tried actually looking for work, raising then taking someone else's money. It's not even a lot of money... No one will give you this amount of money, because if you struggle to earn 2-5k between 5 of you, then you don't have a single shredd of hope to see any return on money borrowed.

Go earn the money... look for jobs.

This feature didn't work at the best of times, and became so unreliable...

I also don't believe that the blocked sites was linked to my Google account, because I had blocked sooo many different pages on W3Schools that I just abandoned using the blocked sites feature altogether.
