Hopefully spinning these talented folks out will result in gaming innovation outside of Microsoft, because the vision inside Microsoft sure looks bleak.
Speckx, Every downturn frees up talent that leads to the next generation of startups. If your finances can handle risk working for a startup or bootstrapping your own go for it. If you need a job now be sure to circle your connections to get better leverage on the inside track for closing those job interviews. Often times they already have a lead candidate the job was specifically written for. See if you have friends and old bosses that would do the same. I hope when you land where you are going you'll write an update.
Retail is dead. Until crime and realistic lease rents are tackled I don't see it reviving. I do think there is a market for a store that sells new and used toys that uses customer service and local ownership to help their community. Similar to how some book stores have managed to survive. The key is to keep their costs low and to be small owner who is invested in their community.
