It is a good point. But people still can be "looking elsewhere" as in searching if they can find another job. It is exactly the thing I would do if I had any chance that I would loose my job. I know my manager would never do it but with layoffs there are greater forces that he may not be able to save me from.

And changing your availability and answering a call or chat from time to time does not cost much. It is not like there is any downside to it.

And if an A player starts looking around great things sometimes happen. He may get hired at much higher position that would justify the salary. Or he may have already earned a lot at FB and may decide this is the time to invest in building a startup, etc.

At my previous company I got in an argument with my boss and just changed my availability on LI. Just out of spite. This led me to an offer that changed my life. And there is a lot of people so much better at their job than I am.

F for Southwest and the tower for lack of awareness, big fucking A+ for FedEx guys for babysitting everybody around.

I think one problem with the radio communication is that because of its terse and scripted nature all of the emotion is removed and it does not convey the urgency.

I can imagine the apprehension of FedEx pilots when they asked "confirming we are cleared to land Runway 18 Left?". I can also understand why the controller just treated it as one of the million other question of the same type without ever catching there is anything wrong here.

Successful person is one that is able to achieve their goals that they deem worthy.

That's it. If you set out on doing something you would be proud of if you did and then achieve it, you are successful.

To be sure, most people who got successful don't really understand how they got there. Most of the time they think they do but then what really happens is they are rationalising and/or using circular logic.

Don't get me wrong, they most likely put a lot of work in and most likely did a lot of things right but deep understanding of it is not necessary for success.

I am talking best employees. People who will find good job no matter what. People you need to keep because they are actually the ones who make the show going.

You got hired thinking you will get some amount of money (salary + shares) now those shares are worth little even before they got vested.

So you cut your loss and get hired at some other place that will give you more of your comp in form of salary than shares because you feel burned.

I do not believe the statement.

Whatever the reasons were (and we can probably guess some of those), they probably spent significant effort to picture it in the most palatable way possible.

My take would be:

* They hired a lot of people in a short time and with this probably their productivity fell a lot. They want to remove ballast and hopefully improve average productivity.

* They are scared about falling share price. A lot of Meta employees get significant part of their comp in form of shares and so falling share price will mean their best people are going to start to leave or they will have to increase their comp considerably. So they are looking to appease investors by cutting costs.

* They are loosing users and expect to start loosing ad revenue. Having on idea how to improve their revenue the only way out to stay in the game for longer is to start cutting costs more aggresively.

* They have no idea what to do with all those people they have hired because their CEO is doing something else at the moment. And (in my experience, not based on facts) the culture at Meta is very likely that everybody is looking up to CEO or nothing happens.

It is different for different cultures but also depends on mobility.

In western world it is currently family but that's because family ties are much more likely to be preserved over time than ties to your village.

In other places in the world people are so immobile that they are expected to be born, grow up, work and die in the same village. And so ties to your local community are much more likely to be preserved over time just like ties to your family. It is not that the village replaces your family, it is just another group of people where it makes sense to invest to get something back in the future. Imagine you had tight knit group of friends where you left school but somehow are still able to stick together. If you trusted that this will continue for a long time it would be much easier to invest within the group knowing somebody might help you out later.

Yes. People knocking on our doors thinking they were hired and come to start their first day of work.

What happened was the fraudsters asked the candidates to buy some hardware on their own claiming we will reimburse them. Then they said they are sending them money to reimburse them but they made a mistake and sent too much and asked to send back the difference.

Another variant was they asked them to buy computers and then send to fraudster's address ostensibly for software installation.

We tweaked our website so that candidates browsing our website learn we never do such things, we explained the hiring process and especially the communication.

Very strange understanding of the word "evidence".

No sane SSD manufacturer would do such thing on purpose. You do it and you loose business, that's it.

The simplest explanation is that somebody made an honest engineering mistake.
