I am interested what sources of news people in Australia recommend. Is there anything that’s free, high quality and not ideologically driven?

From the little I've watched ABC on youtube they are pretty biased. Very pro UK and anti EU.

I worked at ABC for 5years as a dev, they are far left when it comes to political views and yes they try to imitate what BBC does. But still it is the best national news site in Australia. smh is next.
Describing the ABC as "far left" is as much of a nonsense as describing it as "anti-EU".
