interesting that even 70 miles are an issue. does the "modem" check GPS or is it really that selective?

When you factor in Doppler shifts in frequency of fast moving LEO satellites, yes, it is that selective.

However, at some point, I hope they will add an option to geo-position the terminals automatically.
