What Is Going on in China?
Social media is full of theories and stories, but it’s almost impossible to find any confirmed information at all. Anyone knows what’s up?

Social media is pretty much useless for that aspect. I'd wait until the 20th National Congress to conclude.
Alternate hypothesis: they're preparing for open war and the "coup against Xi" message is just put out as a potential alternate explanation?

Probably nothing.
Either nothing, or the most important thing going on in the world today. But as you say, probably nothing.
If it is just a false rumor, that still raises the question of whether or not it was started by anti-Xi forces inside China, or just some random gossip. The former might be part of a plan of psychological harassment of Xi, the latter just evidence that you can't trust everything you read on the internet. I guess we'll find out soon?
I'd like to add to what I just said and point out that the latter scenario was actually used in Venezuela where they'd have fake "coups" to see who actually didn't like Chavez, or as the regime said, "was on the CIA payroll." Because who else would object to living in a poor country where you can't even work in the oil industry because all the rights have been sold, in the ground, in perpetuity, to Gazprom and/or Sinopec?

Maybe I'm missing the context, but what exactly is "it". The OP doesn't say and neither does this.

It could also be started by a pro-Xi faction, to expose whoever reacts favorably.
Ah, that's the one I was looking for.
