For that use case SMB with Time Machine you just need a mini PC type that you can install Linux or BSD OS, and the Samba configuration is really simple, up to 20 lines in one conf file to support Apple Time machine. It will always be up to date, secure and support latest SMB protocol features, unlike any pre-built NAS devices.
But Ubiquiti have changed. The new hardware is silly - little screens and do-everything-on-an-app-with-our-cloud firmware. It's my infrastructure, I don't want to rely on your cloud! I only hope they go back to making good hardware and letting us use it for what we want.
