In reply to .3: bancontact is nearly free per operation, but credit card were percentage heavy fee per transaction... That's why. And don't forget that the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg will prefer debit over credit for payment.

Don't forget that the banking world is still under a lot of pressure from the various government (systemic risk assessment for example) and the stakeholders. It's a mess!

I've tried the alternative for Photoshop and came out unimpressed. It's even worse for Illustrator, and I hate this software. They're not perfect. I don't like the pricing either or their attitude. Still, After Effect, Illustrator, Indesign are very good. I'm not ripped off with the suite at the end...

I have the same issue with Maxon and Zbrush: nothing is close, but it's still the best at what it does.

We have an even worse company around: Autodesk. And they have competition in the CAD, 3D creation world (that they tried to destroy, but Blender changed the game and Houdini is another world)... but not so much around Revit. Architect would destroy them if they could. But no alternative works.

So let's not insult user here: people tries the alternative. They're not good enough. They're worse.

Simulation, analysis, rendering... All those gobbles memory, CPU, sometimes graphic card. Real time works also: huge data set in real time — sensor for production line or environmental monitoring for example.

For word processing, basic image manipulation, electron app (well...) even the "cheap" Macbook Neo is good enough, and it's a last year phone CPU. But that's not enough for a lot of use case.

Sound card works fine on USB2 (RME for example has cards on USB2 that can manage 30/30 io at 192khz without issue at low latency if you have the CPU to deal with the load)

With USB3 you have 94 i/o…

For years pci has not been mandatory for audio. UAD, Apogee, RME and other high end brands will push you to them. Or even only provide them as usb device… even Thunderbolt is not needed here.

And that’s been the case for a while! My Fireface UC from 15 years ago can deal with 16 channels at 96khz at 256 sample. On PC and Mac.

Sadly no — you have toys (none open source and reliability is... well, let's say that the repair are regular and out of support) or you can try to create yourself a waterproof solution (that's complex). Most connector cost a lot, 3D printing is not really an option (especially at depth), pressure is not joke to deal with... And then you'll have to fight with the environment (algae, plants), water salinity, acidity and so on. Other system at the same level costs more — I think the next one is at 25k without option. Don't forget that if for any reason you need to reach it at depth, you'll have to dive. Please don't do that alone...

It's a high cost hobby :(

Blue Robotics (bluerobotics.com) is also using Pi, for their BlueRov and survey boat (BlueBoat) - they’re quite nice to use (and not toys… you can add sonar, dvl, usbl locator to go at depth - max 600m with the kit)

I’m also starting to build other water/ground vehicles for underground exploration - communication and localisation are challenging, without speaking about navigation on uncertain terrain. Pi are accessible and cheap, and the Pico’s are also very useful to interface with the motors, sensor and so on.

CAD is complicated, yes. But the biggest pain point is that engineering requires a lot of adjacent knowledge about material, tolerance, mechanical design, tooling, and so on. Making things requires patience.

CAD is the easy part.

Try to buy a new TV without « smart » features. It’s nearly impossible and all of them will come with some kind of ads on it. I fear it will become impossible to buy a fridge without screen and ad if we don’t find a way to stop this. It’s pure profit for manufacturers and the consumers are fucked since fridge are basic necessities.

I used a "modern" app written in Cincom Smalltalk this year (still maintain and sold a high price), and you don't see the underlying system. Like you don't see the source code when opening any other app, in fact. The app resets the state at startup, so no lingering eternal session.

It's funny because in the past I got the chance to test izware Mirai, which is written in Lisp — when the app got into a problematic state (which was often on my machine) you were sent to the REPL where you could inspect the memory and so on. It was alien to me at the time. Today I dream of having that.

Your comment show a lack of understanding of the condition. With ADHD, we suffer from difficulties with executive functions, like adhering to a planning, being able to chose to work on something... I have obsession: I can't decide on what. I can work at length on complex subjects, again, probably not the one you expect.

It's not a choice.

Medication is not a silver bullet, but it allows, as explained in the parent article to do those things.

And after a while, your hobby if physical will take space for things that are done, and that you don't need anymore. So why not resell them and fund the next steps ?

Uhmm, the correct way would be: 0. focus on less thing; 1. have fun doing them; don't stress about it, you're not competing; 2. do it, more and more. The important point is to DO. Everything else will come, eventually.

They're pretty good with their previous model. You can upgrade/improve nearly everything from an original 911 which is incredible... or rebuild it from the ground up. Now that's why a car from 1980 cost is not far from a new one. And that they're investment.

Hey, why don’t you try harder is what I’ve heard all my life. I can’t. I’ve tried. I failed. I lost a lot of things. Made a lot of mistakes due to focusing on the wrong thing at the wrong time (most recently nearly got heavily hurt with a mill although I know I need to be very careful and I was fully engaged)

So no, it’s not only with boring task. I’d love to. My life would be far easier.

Heck I can have hyper focus on boring task because it’s relaxing.

So no. It’s not only will with boring task :(

There’s still sound card with programmable DSP, quite often used to replicate high end effects. They cost a lot - and every plug-in are specialized to a brand. Still quite useful because the quality of those are very high, and don’t impact the recording process.

Or there’s still some “generic” box (I mean that you can program yourself) like the Symbolic Sound Kyma Capybara. They’re quite niche thought, like modular synth.

I have sub 5ms latency with my RME sound card, could probably go lower. What will hurt after a long while is the bandwidth at 192khz plus some other protocol on top (clock syncing, midi…). But we’re speaking of more than 64 channel in AND out.

So USB is pretty good, and for most sound card, USB2 is enough. Otherwise you can go Thunderbolt, which offer on par experience with PCIe.

What a consumer sound card offer now a day is better dac compare to the one of your motherboard or better output for headset.
