Because then people will just flock to open weight models that are even cheaper and Anthropic/OpenAI will go bankrupt. Then somebody will buy those companies for cents on the dollar and run a profitable token selling business for today's prices without doing any new research. New model releases will slow to a crawl but that's it.

I dont think these slow indicators and developments hold much water the next few decades. We have seen the first inklings what the brave new multipolar world is going to look like and it does not bode well for much of the world. As long as Russia breaks down before the shit really hits the fan, Europe should be fine(r) than most.

They are not. They are necessary for the development of future models, which does not influence the availability of the current ones. Plus you have chinese models distilling current SOTA for pennies on the dollar, so as a consumer I never will be worse off in the long (1-2 years) run.

As long as the improvement is vastly more valuable in my time than the added cost I will always use the best model. I think it depends on your situation and tasks what makes sense.

I do think first past the post is a big part of the problem. Combined with primaries dominated by the most radical parts of the population you have the recipe for very unhinged results.
