I'm not sure what some people are saying when they state a VPN isn't useful for this case. Either they are very misinformed, or working for an entity that undermines human rights for a living, ex. NSA.

Yeah, that is pretty rough. I've been in similar situations and I tell my self to just try to be a better person today than to dwell over the past. I can't change what I've done but try to do better.
Completely uncensored communication is really the only way forward.
We do not know what will be illegal tomorrow which was legal today. And if you do not morally agree with the laws, that is why we have uncensored technology. The best use case.
It is sick what people do to our children. This is an egregious example of why it should be very illegal to do any type of surveillance without clear consent from all parties.
Even with the law, it is in my opinion that anyone being surveilled must be informed of this aggressive act.
