People often blame phones, but I blame the runaway success of Obamas first campaign. His team ran the most effective targeting campaign online I'd ever seen. People I knew in Canada cared more than about him than local politics. I think it highlighted the potential of online propaganda to such an extent that everyone started targeting online people. Good an bad.

That's definitely what I've seen happen most.

It is a silly school of thought though. The same school of thought can also be found recommending to not give raises to their most loyal employees.

Every midjourney image has the same feeling to it. A bit 1950s sci-fi artist. I guess it's just that it all looks airbrushed? I can't put my finger on it.

As I said, for everyone involved it is unfortunate, but the majority of people without power still choose not to be complicit in fraud.

Unfortunately for everyone involved, the waiter is complicit in the fraud and no longer deserves a tip.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moving_the_goalposts reviewing the 'see also' section of the goalposts wikipage is like looking at a syllabus for PR. People are terrible.

I think it was really just residual PR intended to try and shake off the stink of Balmers run.

It doesn't have to be, no, but it might be. It's worth reconsidering the things we believe every now and then.

It can be both true and used for astroturfing.

I believe this is a form of astroturfing and it is hard not to see this stuff. Remember all those articles about the AI winter a few years ago? In reality, there was no winter. Lot's of smart people took advantage of the opportunity and got incredibly wealthy during that period of time and now we see some of the fruits of that labour. It's just the beginning too.

It's important, in my opinion, to always ask 'who benefits from me believing this?'

What you've got there is legacy wealth and power, obtained by violence no less, using it's wealth and power to build local indoctrination centres that help sustain the legacy. If that wealth and power built MtG play centres or I dunno milk shake shacks, you'd now be lamenting the value that chilling milk has on communities.

Edit: this sounds way more antagonistic than I wanted. I was aiming for cheeky. Happy Friday, fellow beneficiaries of historical violence!

Remember when IE didn't support it? And the goofy hacks Microsoft made people do to support transparency on websites?

Consider how much space all the thrown out Apple products take up in landfills.

You maintain them because theyre made to be maintained.

It's pretty hard to wear out silicon. That's why the batteries are glued in and they're made out of glass. To encourage them to artificially wear them out.

I did and do the exact same thing!

Except it's still a grind and I haven't experienced any compounding luck. Just exercises in endless nail pulling.

Is it possible that you just... Got lucky?

Those tools will last forever so that money makes sense. Apples engages in planned obsolescence so the cost isnt the same. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Planned_obsolescence https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Batterygate
