The map of ALPR nodes show that some are installed by "Flock Safety" when you click on a single one and view the details.

So I would assume those two things are directly connected.

Just speculation though. Don't have time to verify currently.

Now I want to say this as polite as possible, but I think you might be under false impressions as to what this site is. It might look like "Reddit, but for IT", but many people here are very, very particular about protocol. You can disagree with people, in fact, it's good to have people disagree with what you are sharing because it allows you to explain and strengthen your position.

The "rant" is not a bug, it is a feature. The only reason I frequent this website is for the prolific pontification on random topics. There aren't many other places I can find such a high concentration of people with an above average intelligence sharing their internal thoughts and opinions in relatively neutral/objective forum.

I'm a lurker. I don't really post much, because I often don't have much of value to contribute that hasn't already be said. The most valuable aspect of HN is it's dicussions. I've found so many useful bits of info in the comments of seemingly unrelated articles.

> Don't you get sick of trying to use chatbots that don't work? Are you not fed up of calling calling CS hotlines and spending loads of money on it?

You aren't going to convince many people here with a call to action like this, especially after calling a relatively civil discussion between users to be "ranting". Show us why we should care based on the merits of the product at hand. If someone pokes holes in it, defend that feature or accept the criticism. Candidly, I don't even really know much about your product because your behavior here turned me off from even clicking the link.

The message I'm responding to reads as petulant or indignant, which is not a good look if you are attempting to cultivate an audience here. I see your previous response to my commentary on the topic of certain punctuation making human written text look similar to LLM output appears to have broken a rule and subsequently got removed, which is also concerning.

Overall, it may just be best to cut your losses today and stop arguing with every critique/criticism. Maybe a do a bit more research about your audience next time. I say this as someone who has been in your shoes before. Not trying to be a dick. Treat it as a learning experience.

I use the em-dash and en-dash pretty often—as many academically-styled human authors do—and sometimes I worry my writing style makes my content seem like LLM output. I tend to use it more when I've been using a lot of parenthesis for lists or elaboration (eg. & ie.).

I've found the most telling sign isn't just the presence of the em-dash, but the fact that the em-dash is used for everything, regardless of wether a parentheses, comma, or semi-colon was more appropriate.

Often the em-dash is used "incorrectly" such as the example above where there is a single space on either side of the em-dash and sometimes it is used in place of the en-dash for number ranges too. I regularly have to fight things like ChatGPT to use other "advanced" punctuation in place of the em-dash.

Also line breaks, LLMs love markdown line breaks for some ungodly reason.

That's my pointless pontification for the day. :)

Thank you for the info! I saw some good reviews about Rule the Waves when I was first looking at C:MO, so if you say it's good, I'll definitely have to check it out now.

I'm very much a fan of what I like to call "spreadsheet strategy" games. So if you any other recommendations, I'd love to hear them.

Been playing lots of logistics-heavy games like Factorio, Dwarf Fortress, X4: Foundations, HoI4, and Aurora 4X lately. Tried to learn Empire/Imperium, but I had to shelve that goal to focus on work.

For some reason I really love games that I end up spending more time learning and thinking about than actually playing.

Oh, you are 100% correct and I'm just speculating.

I didn't intend to imply that they only used computers these days, just that they are used sometimes.

Though after looking over my comment once more, I see that it definitely reads that way.

Thanks for correction and extra info! If you have any more, please share as I find this all fascinating.

I'm pretty sure that these days the more modern military wargames done by legitimate organizations, that aren't physical simulations (a.k.a. laser tag for grownups), do use computers and have integrations with full-size flight sims and data analysis tools.

I play game called Command: Modern Operation^¹ which can barely be a called a game, but rather a military command simulation at the operational level masquerading as one for civilian mil-sim nerds such as myself to toy around with.

There is a "Pro" version^² with all sorts of data-analysis and integration with other equipment/software that, according to their website, used by a surprisingly long list of military organizations. In practice, I have no idea how much it actually is used as I don't work in the defense industry.

I'm sure there are other tools out there like this, but this is the only one I've used before. If you like these kind of things I highly recommend it. It's the kind of game that comes with a 400pg ebook if that's your kinda thing. Personally, it tickles my autism just right.

How do you think nougat would handle RPG rulebook PDFs?

I'm looking for a food OCR model to help me transcribe sections of RPG books to markdown. Ideally, I'd like the emphasis such as bold or italics to be transcribed.

The combo of text, numbers, and math symbols seems similar to technical and academic writing, but often has weird formatting, text boxes in the margins, and many diagrams.

This looks amazing, I'll have to play around with this over the weekend.

I regularly hand transcribe RPG PDFs scans from dubious sources that have not always been run through OCR to have selectable text. If it has, it wasn't always done very well.

It's literally faster to type it all myself than fix all the errors from copy-pasting (or after using OCR to turn it into text).

Even if the file was an official PDF the formatting would often get screwed up with lots of double or triple spaces and even tabs included between words.

This would save so much time if I can get it to work. Thanks for sharing!

Steam is the only "digital goods" platform that I meaningfully use and I'm still not entirely happy with that arrangement since, although their terms and conditions currently says they'll offer a DRM-free download if the service were to ever stop, they can change that fact at anytime and have quietly changed other things historically. I often buy older titles from sites like GOG if I just need the game files from some open-source reimplementation and don't need cloud saves or any other Steam features.

Valve was savvy enough to offer additional value and convenience with the platform (especially with all the Linux development they've contributed lately). The ability to easily play a large majority of my Windows games on Linux via Proton, sync those game files between systems automatically, and have built-in IM/VoIP/remote-access is almost worth the fact it might all disappear at a moments notice.

This reads as extremely tone deaf and relatively privileged. Which isn't surprising given the cavalier attitudes towards impoverished people that I've seen many tech workers hold. I'm very glad that you have access to fresh produce on a regular basis. That is not the reality for everyone around the world, let alone everyone in developed nations.

Are vegetables still cheap when you need to travel miles and/or hours away from your place of residence/work? What about if you don't have own a personal vehicle and depend on public transit? When you need to work 3 jobs in order to not become homeless and then still care for multiple children, is it as easy to justify spending several hours of transit back and forth?

We aren't just talking about people eating fast food. That's only a percentage of the people who rely on "junk food" to survive. There are people who source 100% of their calories from a gas station because all the grocery stores, both small-bussiness and corporate, have closed due to crime and/or economic hardship.

There are places where even the local Dollar Tree shuts down. Leaving only gas stations or service stations some of which even keep many things behind bulletproof plexiglass to reduce theft. Would you really want to bus and walk around with a bag full of fresh produce when everyone else is just as hungry as you? That's if the metro service even still runs in your area.

Food deserts are a reality for many people and you have the luxury to live in an areacode that doesn't deal with this due to your relatively high paying IT job. And before you say "everyone can learn to code", no, they can't. Learning new skills requires free downtime that many don't have the luxury of. Many people spend every waking hour working and even sleep less that is healthy in order to work more.

This is only exacerbated when they don't have the fundamental math/science education that CS requires due to chronic underfunding of school districts in those same areacodes. Or even access to any computers besides mobile devices provided "for free" via a monthly service plan. Regardless of how difficult your upbringing was, it's extremely evident that you don't grasp many of the privileges you have had access to during your lifetime.

I can't find the exact statistics at the moment, but a larger than I would like percentage of the US pet food supply chain is consumed by humans. Are you really saying that people who need to eat dog food to get enough calories to not starve to death are just doing that because they are too lazy to go to a grocery store and cook vegetables into a soup?
