I think it's mostly due to mobile phones. Most people seem to spend a substantial amount of their free time staring at their phone screen rather than engaging with books or other forms of entertainment. Phones being bite sized entertainment orientated is probably changing the way people feel about longer forms.

Should have read the terms and conditions

Why has this become a meme? Sure aircon is nice but there are also reasons why it's not common in some parts of Europe. Here in central Prague a lot of the buildings are historic and protected, so you can't just gouge out a section of the building to install an aircon. Also it's generally only hot enough for aircon maybe 2-4 weeks a year. I'm seeing more and more American's yapping about not having aircon in Europe. I assume they're mostly the kind that has never been to Europe

What about allowing people to synthesize dangerous virus protection?

It's a novel and fun idea! I also wonder how it would be represented correctly as a digital image, could be as an actual png or maybe the white/grey checker pattern from PhotoShop? Realistically probably just with a white background

My girlfriend and I were staying at her sisters apartment one Christmas (while the sister and her partner were away). They made homemade kombucha which gave the apartment an overpowering smell. You couldn't escape it anywhere in the apartment, particularly the kitchen. On the first night of arriving while lying in bed my girlfriend wanted to connect to the wifi but we didn't know the password. I guessed it first attempt, and yes it was kombucha

This reminds me of something similar I did as a teenager in the 90s. Also some shareware game, can't remember exactly what it was about (I think a submarine game?). The shareware version only gave access to the first map. After digging around the files I found that it included all the maps and simply renaming map n to map 1's file name allowed you to play it

Czech Republic didn't become Czechia, it's still called Czech Republic. Czechia is just the official English short name.

But why block the ui until then? Surely you can just not make any requests until the checks are complete?

How much impact does it realistically have on climate change? I would expect it to be relatively small compared to things like owning a car?

In a perfect world we would want to reduce emissions as much as possible in every facet of life, but in the real world I think we should pick battles that have the biggest impact.

Why do you quote only the end, the full sentence is: We cannot discard, for example, than an ant has a greater qualia level than

They're saying that since we don't know how to "measure consciousness" we can't be certain that an ant doesn't have more "consciousness" than us. Obviously it seems very unlikely, but we can't be certain

If the compound words all have single word entries in the dictionary that when combined mean the same thing what is the point?

Water: transparent, odorless, tasteless liquid

Boiling: having reached the boiling point

Boiling Water: transparent, odorless, tasteless liquid which has reached the boiling point

If Boiling Water had some other completely different meaning that has nothing to do with the individual words then sure, maybe, otherwise this is completely redundant and opinionated.

Agree, this kind of complexity is there for a reason. I would rather have a complex component that handles all the cases within its usage in the codebase over having a bunch of little hacks/changes in the usage. It's far easier to maintain one complex component than many different usages of that component.

And you don't have to use such a complex component library if you don't need it. For small codebases it often is overkill. But for large codebases it's a massively worthwhile investment.

I like the idea of this, but why not just have some time per week/sprint for bugs? At my company we prioritise features, but we also take some bug tickets every sprint (sometimes loads of bug tickets if there aren't many new features ready for dev), and generally one engineer is on "prod support" which means tackling bugs as they get reported
