FTFA - "While imports have risen, U.S. producers have seen business shrivel, with 1,200 manufacturing jobs lost and a 27 percent wage decline in the four years to 2016. U.S. solar cell plants went from running at 81.7 percent of capacity in 2014 to 28.9 percent in 2016, the filing said."
So, this happened during Obama's administration...
I think this gets at something that's been bugging me for a while: corporations used to be restricted in the amount of time that they were allowed to operate. They were of limited duration. At some point, the rules were relaxed. That gave rise to the mega-corps we have that now have no limits but what they can get away with. If we could put the genie back in the bottle we would have a much more competitive group of companies, and rent-seeking would be minimized.
Of course, the devil is in the details: no one benefiting from the status quo will go along with the scheme. And they're the ones in control (no matter who is in the White House).
Wait, you're saying that, instead of trusting a couple of companies that can only hinder you financially we should trust a large company that can jail us forever?
Anecdotal, but - me too! (by the way, how many times does it have to be anecdotal before it's no longer anecdotal?)
Anyways - my personal opinion (for what it's worth) is to teach them in multiple activities, not only learning math/science/English/whatever, but also learning physical skills. I think that if you can show them progress through repetition in physical skills you can help them generalize that to more mental pursuits. Everyone knows that if you skip leg day you end up with matchsticks. Same with the mental muscle.
Funny thing is, membership in a group does not limit the spectrum of thought: there are people on both sides of the liberal/conservative divide that are rational. The problem is in the meta-group-think going on for the groups as a whole. Kinda like emergent behaviour in insects. The reasonable voices on both sides are drowned out by the crazies, on both sides.
That's a good analogy for it - and, like the banks, these people should have to pay the costs of their bad behaviour. But it seems our society is trending more towards rights and less towards responsibility. Big business gets away with it, now individual feel they should be absolved of responsibility too.
