Can an insect feel pain? What about a mushroom, or a plant? What things are conscious enough to feel pain? I'm genuinely asking because I because it seems arbitrary as to where the line gets drawn. Before the 1980s it was the medical consensus that babies weren't capable of feeling pain even though this is now widely recognized as untrue.

I read the title and initially assumed this was about web serials[1] in the sense of serialized fiction posted to the internet.

The thing that's changed is how time is no longer major limiting factor. Previously Jill would have had to learn enough about programming to make an app, whereas now she can write a few prompts and receive something good enough even if her lack of programming knowledge means the code is house-of-cards waiting to fall

At the core of this is that your friend came to the realization that he wanted to change his life. He can credit his time in jail for this. However that doesn't mean it will be the same for everyone, or that there's only a single potential trigger to get someone to recover from drug addiction

Part of what I think they were getting at is that suburban living is usually a long term burden on state budgets because the lower density means that maintenance costs aren't fully covered by tax revenue. If people want to live in these communities they should be expected to cover the costs, but since the necessary tax increases aren't popular they never get passed and the budget becomes unbalanced

I feel the perceived difficulty varies from person to person. Personally I found Mandarin much easier to pick up than German or Spanish, since you don't have to worry about conjugation.
