It doesn't require the browser to be always on, unless you want to download something (which is the same as a normal download). Do you mean it's better for the health of the swarm for a particular file? Otherwise I'm not sure I get your point.

FRITZboxes are better in terms of their software. The names and descriptions for the various controls are written in proper language, and there are loads of graphs and stats for the nerds. My only gripes are that the interface relies too much on JavaScript (you get sent back to the login when you refresh the page...) and that, at least on my model, there is no way to perform a factory reset without plugging in a phone handset (who has one of those these days!).

Of course, OpenWRT still kills it in terms of support for standards. FRITZboxes have their own stupid mesh protocol that's only compatible with other FRITZboxes, not implementing e.g. 802.11s.

I was pointed to that already - thanks. Looks promising.

Yeah, I don't get it either. I don't really want anything provided by the software on the watch, just the hardware, and I'll do the rest. I realise my use-case is in the 0.005%, but when companies can ship tens of millions of these I am surprised there isn't someone selling what I'm after.

I looked into it but watches, like phones, fall into the category of things that really do just need built by a company with tiny unsolderable-by-humans parts. When I checked maybe a year ago I found a fitness tracker that someone had found a way to upload new firmware to, but the hardware was no longer manufactured so you had to find second-hand parts on eBay, and there weren't many on sale in Europe. I gave up hoping the idea of an open hardware health watch would be the topic of a Kickstarter in the future.

Is it possible to download the data from the watch without an iDevice?

What I dream of is a health monitor watch that's built from open hardware and gives me complete control over and ownership of my data. I don't trust any profit-driven company, even Apple, with such private information.

EDIT: thanks to obenn, who pointed me towards [1]. Still in development, but looks promising.

To add to your point, he didn't even say it wouldn't be a good investment; in fact he said if someone pointed a gun to his head he would choose to invest. His problem was he couldn't assess the exact likelihood of success (which he nevertheless reckoned was "high"), and he only goes for investments he considers 100% winners.

Maybe in the future cars will asymptote towards the upper limit of mechanical efficiency (for each given class, like the school run, city trips, long distance, etc.), allowing users to keep them on timescales similar to homes, so the only profitable innovation will then be on the software. Then we might see "car-OS wars" and the beginnings of open source driving systems in parallel.

I usually save the recipe from the site directly instead of bookmarking it. I've been burned a few times by a few of the big, spammy recipe sites (Allrecipes, etc.) when they've taken a recipe down. No idea why, but all it did was reduce my visits to their site from a few times per month to zero.

Can you add a link to the title image to go back to the homepage? I try this on pretty much every website out of muscle memory.
