I don’t live in an expensive area but the general move towards $15/hr minimum has either caused or been a really strong indicative symptom of something like a collapse in the value of wages. A lot of people doubled their wages nearly overnight here, while myself making $25 did not see a raise at all.

I was an account manager at a MSP making $25 and I remember seeing a sign for a rural bar “line cook wanted $25/hour”. Tried to use that as a bargaining chip to show him how bad it was and he told me to go work at the bar if I wanted the same money for less work. No, I’d like to be gain experience and be treated like a professional, please.

Point being, $50K ain’t shit. Even in rural areas.

A few years ago I got a 53 Chevrolet pickup with a 3 speed (and a nice BW overdrive attachment). Learned how to drive a manual in that truck and will never buy an automatic again as long as I can choose. Actually operating the vehicle is extremely satisfying and fun. I’m swapping out the C-4 in my 65 mustang for a T-5 as soon as I can spare the cash/time. For me it’s definitely not a matter of practicality but a “vinyl” type of thing. My DD has a CVT but at least emulates shifting with paddles

>made it past peer review

I don’t think that’s an especially difficult thing to do. It seems any paper dealing with social sciences or history that fits the current narrative is lauded and “reviewed” favorably. I think the mechanism which facilitates this is relatively simple and similar to how USSR officials would rather bring good news than bad facts

I setup an AWS account in college before I had ever worked and dealt with enterprise security. Didn’t use the account for anything. No 2FA and a weak password and all of a sudden I have a $15,000 bill from a crypto mining script. Worked with Amazon, got everything cleaned up, turned on 2FA and was only charged $100. Pretty generous considering it was entirely my fault

I agree. We should start leaving Gentoo tarball CDs in minority neighborhoods

Why should anyone else’s kids be any of my concern? The metropolitan areas (who have no answers for their own kids and therefore have not increased any socioeconomic situations) are now pushing into my district students who simply don’t care about education and have immediately pushed all perceived “weird” (not lower class urban culture) kids down the hierarchy via bullying. My district won’t even acknowledge this is explicitly a planned phenomena (the districts all come to an agreement) and so certainly won’t do anything to remedy the situation. They run their “everyone is the same and happy and everything is awesome” programs and people get pats on the back but come Monday the teacher is too busy trying to get these kids to not be disruptive to even get to the introductory curriculum much less an excellent lecture.

If every single actor in the bureaucracy is actively working against my interests and the interests of my immediate neighbors (who largely share my opinions) then why should I participate? They’re going to tax me anyway, how is that not enough for you? It’s my kid and I’ll do as I damn well please since I have the motivation to ensure their success and the school definitely doesn’t. People that want sweeping “force everyone to do this, see here’s a news article about Finland” are psychologically malformed in my opinion.

You really skipped over that “didn’t have rights” part. How many people were in Gulag? And you think there was no corruption in the ruling communist class? Corruption is a feature of any political organization and should be stopped, but money was just as much a motivator for the communists as it is for the capitalists. The only difference is that it wasn’t available to the working class so they weren’t incentivized to produce or invent.

HN is exceptionally left-leaning. The only reason posts like that get downvoted is because it signals some kind of moral posturing that is completely irrelevant/unearned and exceptionally negative. It also comes across as lazy when people try to discuss some nuanced topic and a poster just blankets the conversation with the same old cliched anti-imperialist anti-“West” rhetoric while adding nothing of substance other than a wiki link. It’s senseless. Go drill some wells in Africa if you want to help, your lazy “advocacy” is just annoying when spouted at people who don’t hold any responsibility for those events and frankly don’t care.

It’s not happening because 10,000 people who have more intimate knowledge of the business than you or I ever will have made decisions to best suit their current conditions. This isn’t an exception to the rule, you’re just looking at a small timeframe and a remarkably performant company. Why is it so bad for a company to be successful when they have provided so much back to society in the form of R&D? Besides, if I’m doing ML my boss has paid for the card anyway so the price doesn’t concern me.

To me, having a profile with some kind of “like” system (karma) makes it social media. The main incentive is to gain upvotes which dramatically changes the way in which users write their thoughts. Even though there’s nothing tying the “real me” to my profile, I still know it’s me and am incentivized to make posts that will garner more votes. SO, Quora, forums etc all count. Only when people are truly anonymous, with no “score” being kept do I believe it doesn’t count.

You think people didn’t know about other gods until they could drive? Technology gives people corn syrup and adderall while religion can’t fix a toothache. People increasingly believe this means that one is better than another or that they are even attempting to solve the same problems and must be exclusively selected. And Science is just as much a religion as Christianity or any other religion at this point. “Trust the Science”, “I Believe Science is Real”, “Science is True Whether You Believe in it or Not”

Every time I talk to someone that’s on a stack of meds or has gone through multiple journeys using modern medicine they always seem to be the most unhealthy people. It seems like a chicken or egg problem, and maybe it’s just confirmation bias but i much prefer natural remedies. These people seem to be constantly fighting side effects. Too many unknowns when it comes to highly concentrated exotic chemical solutions.
