I'm interested in the form factor and excited about the inclusion of a headphone jack but SailfishOS is the real selling point for me.

I'll buy this if there is a way to remove the app restrictions they have. Ideally, I should be able to flash the default SailfishOS

I would love to see some citations here around serious violence problems on the left. I understand HN can be a bubble chamber, so I'm genuinely looking for a first party source the can corroborate that kind of statement

Check out rnote. It's similar to xournal++ but has an infinite canvas and a slightly nicer UI, assuming you're into gtk style apps. I don't know how responsive it is comparatively, I've just been doing research ahead of getting a tablet.

I don't think most immutable distros are designed to prevent users from mounting the root filesystem as read write. They're instead designed around delivering a core system that's guaranteed to work

Silverblue also has really good distrobox integration. Anything not available via flatpak (or things I don't want via flatpak for whatever reason) goes in an arch or debian container. You can then export apps or binaries from the container and have it show up in your desktop menu or path.

Silverblue also supports package management via brew, which works pretty well for CLI utilities

Maybe you'll get a subscription to the jelly of the month club. It's the gift that keeps on giving

I used Hacker's keyboard for years before moving over to unexpected keyboard for any terminal work done via phone. Unexpected keyboard gives easier access to symbols and has slightly larger keys (less keys on the main layer) than Hacker's keyboard.

I still use Gboard for my main keyboard, but looking for replacement suggestions that have a good swipe to text

While you could look at DoF as a sensor limitation, most photographers use it as an artistic choice. Sure, I could take a pic at f/16 and have everything within the frame in focus, but maybe the background is distracting and takes away from the subject. I can choose how much background separation I want; maybe just a touch at f/8, maybe full on blue at f/1.2

There is termux x11 now, which allows you to run graphical applications, though it's a bit fiddly.

I know mikrotik supports this. On the higher end, most of the Dells switches I interacted with as well as Aruba had LLDP. Different manufacturers tend to report their interfaces slightly differently though

Big fan of Silverblue/universal blue Fedora immutable installs. I'm using Aurora, a KDE respin, on my framework 13 AMD. There's a framework specific image and it was one of the most complete out of the box Linux installs I've ever used. I truly think that immutable distros are the way forward for desktop Linux

Fairly sure you can run a vnc client on a remarkable 2. I've been on the fence about getting one for a few years and I'm not super up to date on them, but a quick search turned this up https://github.com/matteodelabre/vnsee

It's possible to run postmarketos in a proot within termux on android if you'd like to try it out or just want a nice touch enabled Linux UI on your phone/tablet. There are some incomplete instructions for an older version of postmarketos on the termux subreddit, I'm currently working on an updated and cleaner version.

Fantastic post. I'm in the commercial AV field and this has inspired me to go mirror the port leading into my Dante preamp to see if I can replicate gain control and phantom power via my control system. Should make for a fun morning!

I need to dig in this project and see what's needed to help support additional mixers. I have a Yamaha QL1 and a Digico S21 at my disposal.

Would an immutable distro such as Fedora Silverblue for the bill? There are ways to roll your own image as well

There's no all in one solution that I'm aware of that ticks all of those boxes. If you're already standing up a server, I would recommend using mikrotik switches along with tplink omada APs. You can set up the free omada controller on the server.

For the camera side, Reolink or Amcrest POE cameras (or WiFi if you must) paired with a PVR like Blue Iris if you're a Windows guy or Frigate on the Linux side

I'm currently in the process of setting up pipewire in an audio engineering setting. Currently in the process of latency tuning, hovering around 9ms right now, would love to cut that in half.

I'm using ardour (after the creator recommended I try it in another HN thread) on Debian with a realtime kernel for a 16 in by 8 out interface for eventual use as a FOH mixing console.

After lots of tweaking, I haven't seen much improvement over the default pipewire-jack config, but I've only recently started tackling realtime priorities and modifying pipewire metadata for interfaces.

I'm using reaper for the mixing / routing portion, along with EQ and FX, though I'm going to take a look at using ardour this week instead. I imagine you could use pipewire by itself to achieve this, but if you're looking at more complicated routing and mixing, a DAW would be helpful.

I've used ardour in the past and enjoyed it but I initially chose reaper because I'm more familiar with it. I've been fighting some routing issues in reaper, I'll give ardour a try this week and see how it fits. Appreciate the work you do!

Looks into QSys and biamp DSPs. Folks run whole stadiums worth of dsp on them
