You've probably already seen it and it doesn't fit most of the requirements but some might be interested to see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WikiReader

I'm basically on the "other side", I know some people have genuine security concerns but still find it amusing when people complain about devices being "obsolete" once they no longer receive updates, when I avoid them like the plague because all they ever do is remove intended and unintended freedoms.

But maybe we're in a trap, because we can use hacks to do what we need, it's not worth the effort of switching from Android etc. But if these hacks were fully gone, alternatives would find it easier get off the ground.

Have to hope so because we're going to find out, these systems are only getting more secure and locked-down with time.

See here or the .gov link from it if you prefer

Regardless of whether wages match inflation completely or how long they take to do so, the fact is that if solar panels cost the same in dollars as they did 10 years ago, the average person's wage buys more of them.

You could counter-argue that other things gone up by so much that despite this, people have less money to spare for solar panels. But given that solar panels are competing with some of those things, importantly fossil fuels, it's still important to be clear that they are getting cheaper - as the trend continues a solar panel pays for itself more and more quickly.

Not seeing ads is always free, just don't use the site, Reddit premium=content-without-ads.

It's easy for them to allow premium users API access, they'll still be developed for third-party apps with an accessibility focus amongst other things.

Reddit doesn't owe us anything. But given how easy this would be, it's unsurprising that taking the current obtuse approach makes some people not want to use the site.

Funnily enough there is also Reddit ReVanced, but with enough effort Reddit or YouTube could stop them working, so their existence doesn't change the argument about free/open APIs.

The Spotify solution (premium users can use any third-party client) would have made lots of money with less uproar. Another bonus, solves the supposed issues with allowing NSFW content through APIs. Google, for one, take a credit card as proof of being 18+ in the EU (you have a choice between that and scanning an ID card).

Or if Reddit doesn't want to handle billing the users directly for whatever reason, require signin and charge the devs per user. Even some sort of grace period and reasonable prices per-request would have made a big difference, Apollo dev's hard blocker seemed to be conflict with existing billing cycles.

Even though reddit probably don't tag the ads on their website deliberately, it's still really easy to block them in a browser

LEDs released->electricity bill reduced->money freed up->wages increase->price of everything else increases

It's nice to see these efficiency gains aren't entirely eaten up in this way and the is some ultimate benefit for humans, $1 2023 >= $1 1990 as far as lighting, and wages are up. You can have the lights on more and keep the same quality of life in all other regards. But this can be used to mask growing inequality, just take some but not all of the gains, e.g. by artificially limiting housing supply, QoL still improves so no revolution.
