I’ll throw in mine. I think if we look at Japanese culture and actions, Kamikaze, suicide, honor, they were highly averse to surrendering.

I think once two of their cities were completely disappeared, they realized that they, and everything they loved could be evaporated at any moment.

It would be utterly insane to continue under these circumstances.

The question of would they have surrendered otherwise - i don't believe so. I don’t think that’s something we should have had to find out, either. I think people were exhausted by that point and just wanted the war to end.
