But the apartments which people can afford has gotten smaller now and also with the rise of the minimalistic culture, I have no space to put movie and games discs. I am ok with renting media. Like most people I don't re-watch movies and re-play single player games often.

imo it's just free market at play here which happens to provide value to the companies more than the consumers.

I disagree. Windows is still a very capable operating system. Is AI nonsense annoying? sure, but so are the ads on internet and only a tiny fraction of population uses adblockers.

Consumer buy laptops and smartphones, not operating systems. As long as there is no competing consumer product, Microsoft is not losing any meaningful share anytime soon. imo smartglasses might be more of a real threat to windows than copilot.

Here in the Netherlands, Macbook Neo is €700. That is by no measure a cheap laptop. Also at this price range there is plenty of competition from companies like Asus.

Recently I built a gaming PC, and I ended up installing Windows. Disabling windows AI features is significantly easier than dealing with small but frequent annoyance of linux distros.

Anthropic can now no longer buy new hardware and probably will be kicked out of all cloud compute. They can not also move to a different jurisdiction as exporting model weights is now considered same as exporting ICBM technology. Wow, companies in China are now more free than Anthropic. It's a death sentence, and a huge win for OpenAI.

Vancouver is very close to Seattle. Would restrictions in H-1B result in increased hiring in Canada or a higher usage of L-1 visa perhaps?

Depends on how they would do it. If Apple were to replace brew with an official package manager which just works, most people wouldn't bat an eye.

The way Apple could do it is by introducing the said package manager for iPadOS. iPadOS could soon grow to do everything what MacOS does but only with certain restrictions. If it's faster but cheaper, most people would then just buy it over a general purpose laptops.
