All these companies are offering quite generous subscription plans if you compare to API pricing.

There's gotta be a limit; nobody can afford to have tons of users who are losing them money every month.

Google has a library/format for that too, with FlatBuffers. Different use cases and advantages really, not clearly better/worse.

This is an extremely interesting article about game design and it's a bit silly to fixate on the title.

People really really want LLMs to output a highly reliable finished product, and I suspect we're probably never gonna get there. Lots of progress over the past couple years, but not on that.

I think it's much more interesting to focus on use cases which don't require that, where gen AI is an intermediate step, a creator of input (whether for humans or for other programs).

Frustratingly I can't recall specific examples, but in the past year there have been several major discussion-worthy tech stories I've seen on The Verge or wherever, and I come to HN a couple hours later and there's either literally nothing or the post got zero interaction. Strange!

A ton of the early discourse about ChatGPT was as an outright Google killer. It mostly hasn't really panned out that way; there's some overlap but the web ain't dead yet. If nothing else, search is a necessary input to the machine.

Still, nice that Google has woken up, even if the search result quality hasn't improved much.

Fentanyl is a fascinating market case study because nobody actually wants fentanyl, they want oxycodone or heroin.

It's the "market data reveals that consumers actually want the cheapest shittiest airplane tickets" of drugs. And you can read that in a couple different ways.

Space aliens are still kinda the best explanation. It's extremely inconclusive, and it's entirely possible that we'll discover some new natural phenomenon to explain it instead, but for now there's not really any known alternative.

Had a fun experience the other day asking "make a graph of [X] vs [Y]" (some chemistry calculations), and the response was blah blah blah explain explain "let me know if you want a graph of this!" Yeah ok thanks for offering.

It depends on what you're doing, but after many years I've just settled on consistently using UTF-8 internally and converting to UCS-2 at the edges when interacting with Win32.

There's just too much UTF-8 input I also need to take, and converting those to wstring hurts my heart.

"Visual Studio for Mac" never had any relation to Visual Studio proper, it was just a rebranded Xamarin Studio. It didn't support C++ at all.

Nobody artificially limits input rates because that would reduce responsiveness. You can analyze a series of inputs to detect humanly-impossible changes.

Honestly the number one thing I miss about America is the big supermarkets and sheer diversity of food products available. Also much better restaurants on average.

Germany is generally a better place to live if you have a low to average income. Think everything from transit to health care to tenants' rights. But like if you're aiming for really high salaries as a software developer, America is the place to be.

How'd you miss her as one of the New York high society characters that Trump was constantly having petty complaints about?

Yeah the defense had no alternative story to offer. Before the trial they sort of hinted that Caroline Ellison was responsible for all the fraud, but they never really made that case in court, presumably because the facts didn't exist.

So it was three co-conspirators testifying and a lot of hard evidence vs SBF saying that he remembered some conversations differently, and being incredibly evasive on cross-examination. They had nothing.

There's no realistic grounds for appeal, probably not even in a country with a more lenient system for appealing criminal convictions. In America, forget it.

He's been convicted, he's gonna stay in jail.

It fits very comfortably into the category of "time management" game, which was a fairly popular casual genre 10-15 years ago. Cook Serve Delicious is probably the one notable example which is still going strong.

Definitely distinct from idle games.

Oh yeah this is absolutely true. I've voluntarily done ~100-hour weeks, and even in my 20s it destroyed me, I needed multiple weeks to recover from even short periods of intense "crunch".

The idea that you're living at the office and actually being productive is just laughable. It is absolutely not helpful except in brief emergency situations.

It's really incredible how much technology and marketing has gone into removing a tiny seam (which is actually not even fully removed anyway).

I don't understand what Facebook is even doing in terms of a metaverse. Like they have the VR goggles, but what are they actually doing with it?

Coincidentally, MMO developer Raph Koster (Ultima Online, Star Wars Galaxies) has recently been detailing in a series of articles what his new company is doing in terms of building a metaverse, and it's pretty exciting in gaming terms.
