Thanks a lot. Have been watching these videos all day long! Looked through the first book too.

(Newbie here). And then going further, shouldn't there also be acceleration and its distribution? It says classical models could not explain why accelerating electrons were not radiating. If acceleration also shows up in QM, then ... a distribution of radiation?

Thanks for the insights. I am interested in learning all this stuff. Am currently going through just Schrodinger's Equation. Do you have book recommendation(s) that include insights everywhere just like what you shared? Thanks.

A discussion on this happened recently here*:

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=48739003

Someone (@rramadass) made me a good set of recommendations from the titles.

* Edit: I see now that linked comment too is from @clmul, the OP here. Thanks clmul!

And now we have Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Account Manager that links the usernames, features to post Instagram posts to Facebook also and vice versa, people sharing links to their Instagram/Facebook posts via WhatsApp statuses, ... what a mess.

This change is so significant that it feels like they are changing the product after it is sold.

Could one stop this by disabling OS updates?

Very very cool! Somehow most names are unfamiliar.

I have very much enjoyed the OP (Mathematics: Its Content, Methods and Meaning). Any particular books that you would recommend?

Interesting. Anyone knows how this compares to using git submodules and subtrees?

I had used those to create separate repo for website artifacts while the same also remain plugged into the webapp dev repo. (Both sides remain modifiable and changes mergeable to the other side.)

Thx.

Something similar for human languages:

"The principle of least effort is another possible explanation: Zipf himself proposed that neither speakers nor hearers using a given language want to work any harder than necessary to reach understanding, and the process that results in approximately equal distribution of effort leads to the observed Zipf distribution.[5][31]" -- From: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zipf%27s_law

"Explicit syntax" would initially be less cognitive effort. Soon that effort would be gone and "terse notation" would lead to lesser typing effort.

I am not sure. What I have heard is that the minor pleads guilty for the entire crime (possibly in exchange for some money behind the scenes).

The broader point is that being a couple days or months younger or older than eighteen years should not result in a drastically different outcomes to begin with.

That paper is cited in the 'introduction' and 'background' sections. This paper is improving by removing some bottlenecks.

Indian laws have the same too. For taxation 'surcharge' applied to high income groups, a patchwork called "marginal relief" fixes it [1], however, leaves ranges in income where 100% of incremental income goes away in taxes.

[1] https://cleartax.in/s/marginal-relief-surcharge

Another place where thresholding is misplaced is minors (below the age of 18 years) being subject to different laws (this is for India at least), e.g., seriously different punishments for crimes like homicide or rape. I have heard that crime groups then purposefully involve minors, push the blames on them if caught, and effectively get away for much less.

>> ... conditions of employment required her to sign a contract that bound her to silence (nondisclosure), forbade her from speaking ill of the company (nondisparagement), and denied her access to the legal system in all her dealings with Meta (binding arbitration).

Aren't the clauses on non-disclosure, arbitration, etc., common in non-Meta employment contracts as well?

Sharing my understanding:

If one starts with Newton's 2nd law (F=ma) assumed, then one can derive kinetic energy to be 0.5mv^2, and this is what most of the answers are explicitly or tacitly doing.

One could however start with Lagrangian formulation along with KE = 0.5mv^2 and drive F=ma. This is where one needs an explanation for why KE = 0.5mv^2, and the first answer (@Ron Maimon) is providing an explanation.

Most books I have come across on Lagrangian formulation secretly assume Newton's laws.

In my opinion, Lagrangian formulation can proceed without Newton's and without even defining momentum as mv, however, now needs KE = 0.5mv^2.

I recently tried KeePassXC. It is very good overall. I am not moving to it however because:

1. I have a side screen that is merely 360 pixels in height. KeePassXC does not work fine on it. KeePass2 does.

2. KeePass2 remembers the names of custom fields added and allows picking from those for a new entry. KeePassXC does not.
