Having read too much history for fun and jobs, the comment sounds wrong. You can go back to the Roman republic to find people concerned about this (Gracchi brothers).

This is a very HN way of looking at academia. The vast majority of academics aren't looking to be "public", they quietly do great work for decades, passing their knowledge down to their students. You don't hear about them because their main job is to educate not bloviate.

Not saying Graber does this, but there are academics (I can think of a Canadian professor) who are very much "public intellectuals" but whose entire career is popular due to controversy. Is that person educating or is he leading a social movement? I guess that's up for debate, but that's hwy people know who he is, not because of great work.

This comes off as naive. I saw the domestic abuse allegations again him and decided to read up.

He had multiple allegations from both exes. He lightly joked about rape, domestic abuse etc. Yeah, they're jokes, but when I stopped being a child that stopped being funny, you can still see him making these jokes int interviews about his situation.

You've got people on HN today that believe that metoo is just made up. Those victims were mocked and denied justice for years because a lot of socially awkward dudes make the mistake of assuming that cause they're nice other guys are, too.

I know nothing bout him other than the public forum that he himself put in. There's no other way to judge him. I think it's telling that you've flipped this around into tropes about gender and being scorned.

How many people actually have the expertise to evalaute medical data like that? They don't. There's a very very small number of Hners that if they are honest with themselves are qualified to do that. I'm not saying that from a high and mghty position, I'm doing that from a place that I see HN talk incredibly ignorantly about all the time. HN is supposed to be smart.

You give the average person the ability to do "research" and they are killing themselves because people fall for all kinds of bullshit. Cults exist. Scam artists are a dime a dozen.

This stuff gets associated with trump and the right because they associate themselves wth it. I don't vote Democratic, I just don't think you're being realistic about how people operate, regardless whether I beleive that "censorship" is the answer or not.

The article is making the point that we don[t actually have it superplushard as a generation.

I work in tech, I have debt, I live frugally, and I've seen how easily it would be to wipe out my entire family's savings with a medical emergency - my dad worked himself to the edge of death.

He's a boomer. We millenials grew up believing that things would always be the idealistic world it was of our childhoods, but that was a really really unique spot in history. We still are some of the most privileged people in history.

Don't give yourselves to these unnatural men - machine men with machine minds and machine hearts!

I guess it's not surprising that one of Zuck's heroes growing up was the first Emperor of Rome. It's true, look that up. It says a lot about the guy. I mean who saw Rome and thought I want to be that murdering little jerk?

Zuck doesn't seem very self-aware.

If you are in the middle of a massive scandals (multiple massive scandals) about major issues like privacy, enabling genocide in certain countries, etc, if you really, really cared, your first step would be to stop what you are doing and fix things.

Instead of taking accountability, Zuck like always has some dumbass excuse about being "humbled". But humble people show they are humble.

If HN gets confused about why there is so much rage at people like Zuck, it's because we can actively see our lives getting worse because at 19 brolord here figured out how to get college kids to sign up for website. I mean, great idea, but I feel like that might, just might affect how you see the rest of the world and nobody in society agreed to this.

He needs to show that he's responsible, that he's grown up. Instead he's doing the next big thing and the next big thing is what any teenager that watched a recent Spielberg money would come up with. If Zuck and some of these tech savants want to impress people maybe they need to finish college so they don't still sound like high schoolers in their 30s.

We should demand more. We're tired of people like Sam and Graham and Zuck complaining about how hard it is when people criticize their work. They want to have insane wealth and have people kiss their ass.

They were ranting about the 4th estate...it is their job to cover stuff like this.

You ever heard of confirmation bias?

Hey, they claim to have 1.8 billion users. If an entity is that large they naturally require more scrutiny.

Give me a break. You act like they're getting bullied up on.

You're not far off but the sad thing is that Hughes died 30 years later. He died due to malnutrition and for years his various control centers had run operations separate enough from him that he had no clue what was going on sometimes, but he still was running much of his empire in that penthouse up to the early 70s.

Hughes was a direct part of Watergate.
