This is such corporate double speak. It's not clear from the title, but this is Mozilla announcing its new advertising network and its pivot into advertising.

This is sad, sad news.

Looking at this chart[0], my guess would be around 1997.

I’m surprised this article wasn’t about Metformin, something gwern has written about[0] and has some popularity in the entire nootropic circle of people that I know.

This channel has some of the best usage of AI art that I’ve seen. I wouldn’t consider the background art of this kind of content core, but it is important. I’m very impressed by what is generated and how well it goes along with what he talks about.

Where have I seen this UI before? :)

"What came first, the music or the misery? Did I listen to music because I was miserable? Or was I miserable because I listened to music? Do all those records turn you into a melancholy person?"

"People worry about kids playing with guns, and teenagers watching violent videos; we are scared that some sort of culture of violence will take them over. Nobody worries about kids listening to thousands - literally thousands - of songs about broken hearts and pain and misery and loss. The unhappiest people I know, romantically speaking, are the ones who like pop music the most; and I don't know whether pop music has caused this unhappiness, but I do know that they've been listening to the sad songs longer than they've been living the unhappy lives."

Why does blockchain need to be involved? Magic: The Gathering Online exists and has existed for 20+ years without the need for a blockchain.

I don't follow your logic. How would constructing a new ship from new materials ever count as being the same as the original ship?

At least in the Ship of Theseus paradox, there is the case where you take the old replaced parts and construct a ship from those parts - which is an interesting question, is it the original ship? In this case, the only thing consistent about the ship is the design. Take mass manufactured goods then - are they the same article because the have the same materials?

I viewed those questions as a play on the Ship of Theseus.

If the ship is completely destroyed and a perfect replica rebuilt elsewhere, is it the same ship? Almost certainly not.

If the ship is slowly replaced over time, is it the same ship? As a matter of form or psychological continuity as posited in the question, almost certainly.

I fear that this is the year "wet-bulb temperature" becomes a term regular households across the world become deeply familiar with. It may be as ubiquitous as the term "social distancing" became.

I've always naively thought that climate disaster was still 10-20 years out, but it seems like it's going to begin in earnest now and instead be completely catastrophic after these next 10 years.

What can I as an individual do? Move to Saskatchewan or Alaska? I already know from a friend in Alaska that the melting permafrost is causing many native villages to sink and collapse, and it's only gotten worse in the past few years. Check out this article on Newtok, AK by National Geographic from 2019: http://archive.today/1enHh

Funny you say that since from what I heard it was the worst of both worlds: the workers _were_ hauled into the office to get laid off.

This looks like a second-chance pool story as it didn't get much attention last time it was posted.

This is such a funny question. It's not a particularly uncommon one either, but I find it so peculiar.

Who's "we" here? Are you saying "we're" the same, you and I? Are you using the royal "we"? Are you a group of people running this same account? But I suppose I do know the answer to that question, "we" is the group of people like you that is still fervently participating in the rat race.

Live as you can, live as you should. There's not much else I or anyone else can really say. If you have goals, try to achieve them. If you fail, get back up. If you succeed, keep on going. What are we going after? We're just living. Is there an end? Unfortunately, yes. But don't take it so seriously.

Read, meditate, go see a therapist, maybe take some drugs. You'll figure it out.

As far as I can tell from anecdotal reports by friends at some of these companies, many of these tech layoffs have been done with little rhyme or reason - at least with regard to technical skill, individual contribution, and team cohesion. There's inklings of metrics that the suits decided on, but it is murky and unclear.

It seems like few to no people in any of their managerial chains were consulted.

I'm curious to hear from HNers if any of you were in the room that got to decide who got to stay and who had to go.
