That joke was based on real life.

edit: see Peter Thiel.

I disagree. I get pissed off when revolutionary scientific news is brought to me only to turn out to be some bogus crap. I don’t care about the replication and peer review process, it’s not fun, it’s banal. I would much rather have preferred to learn about LK-99 once it was confirmed to be a room temp superconductor, and if it wasn’t then I’d rather never hear about it.

Now I have to walk back explanations I gave to various people and explain LK-99 actually isn’t special at all. I will look like a god damn idiot.

The whole time LK-99 was in the news, we were wringing our hands about potential uses and the impact it would have on our world. For once it seemed maybe there was hope that we’d see exciting times again with exponential advances in technology. That dream has now been thoroughly eradicated.

By the time a true room temp superconductor comes out, it probably won’t be in our lifetimes.

I don’t agree with what he did, but as time goes on I understand more why he did it.

Ok so we just have to wait for society to get to the point where they care about images more than photographs.

It’s in a cloud, not on your phone.

But it won’t end there.

Eventually people won’t care much for clarity and precision, that’s boring. The real problem is that everything that can be photographed will eventually have been photographed in all kinds of ways. What people really want is just pictures that look more awesome, in ways other people haven’t seen before.

So instead, raw photos will be little more than prompts that get fed to an AI that “reimagines” the image to be wildly different, using impossible or impractical perspectives, lighting, deleted crowds, anything you can imagine, even fantasy elements like massive planets in the sky or strange critters scurrying about.

And thus, cameras will be more like having your own personal painter in your pocket, painting impressions of places you visit, making them far more interesting than you remember and delighting your followers with unique content. Worlds of pure imagination.

Wow, every word in this article was wrong.

I’d be willing to build and sell software on a pay once own forever model if there’s two caveats: No free customer support, no free updates.

If people don’t care about either of those, good. I don’t care about providing support unless I’m paid to and I don’t care about forcing myself to continue updating something just because I have subscribers.

Wow, I didn’t expect I would read all that but the visualization was so great and made it easy to follow, I learned more about mechanical watches than I ever thought I would!

If every subject could have visualization like this I could learn anything!

This was one of the first things I realized in my early age on the internet. I would often post straight up wrong or wildly flawed arguments that were the opposite of my actual beliefs and when people came to respond against me with well reasoned and thorough counter arguments, I would end up using their arguments as my new arguments in real life.

People have trouble leaving abusive relationships. The author feels they have no real choice because their confidence in finding work outside of Upwork is low. They also are convinced Upwork is a good platform and won’t do this again, besides they believe this whole thing is really their own fault for not vetting clients appropriately. They will work obediently to pay off their $12.5k debt to make Upwork happy again, and then it will be like old times.

You can't really. People think it's simply a matter of getting rid of all the new tech.

It isn't. You'll just be an anachronism. If the entire world isn't living the same way then you are only getting a superficial experience. Instead of living a genuine life, you are merely pretending for a while.

I’d much rather see pedantic comments that are technically correct than people just nodding along and perpetuating meme-like garbage facts. Too often when I scroll through social media I read quotes and posts that make me roll my eyes at how people will avoid critical thinking and reasoning as long as the words sound good and tell a good stereotypical story in their minds. In this case, the idea that vast canyons are formed by little drops of rain over time.

Could I do the same with a masters?

Yes, for three dimensional data visualizations and especially three dimensional visualization that can be seen changing over time.

I like that better. It’s a pain in the ass waking up and not knowing what’s really gonna happen for the day until your standup meeting.

I’d love to see a chess variant where you could move pieces upside down to the bottom side of the board and make moves and pop back up onto the surface at strategic points. Lurker chess.

Peaceful innocent childhoods were a fairly recent phenomenon. In older times being a child often meant forced labor and exposure to brutal or shocking parts of life before you were ready.

We didn’t ruin childhood, we took it back to how it used to be.
