In general, anything that is observed to be true at a smaller scale or context can't be extended to much larger scales. That involves assumptions on logic and mathematics to be homogenous across all scales. A pure theoretical extrapolation without bounds is quite common in mathematics, such as proof by induction etc.

Also, the foundational axioms of logic themselves could be valid only at a scale that is familiar to humans. For example, the strict bounday between true and false might get blurred and things could be true and false at the same time at other scale.

While it is genuinely a huge concern, the legal measure are not going to address it. One has to consider the overall picture, not just a corner of it.

The ship has sailed. There will be addictive designs, products, services etc. The very theme of a business is centered around keeping the customers addicted. It's just a matter of time, every business on this planet would, with the help of AI, make their products and services extremely addictive.

Are you saying EU Council made an illegal Act that violates the provisions in other Acts? Why don't anyone talk about references to those violations?
zkmon

Some folks (mostly Americans) tend to think that their laws, their definitions of terms like "democracy", their beliefs, their norms, their culture - are all universal.

You need to specify which EU laws does this violate. "undemocratic" by your definition. There is no universally precise definition of "democratic". Because I'm sure EU council knows how to be democratic by their own definition of the term. They have an army of legal pundits who ensure that everything is done correctly within their legal framework.

The auto companies said the same - you don't HAVe to drive a car. But then cities were designed for cars, with far-flung work places. Now you HAVE to drive to work. Same with AI. Your world will be woven around AI, giving you no option.

> Databricks’ multi-million line codebase

The combined size of codebases for the underlying opensource products (Apache Spark etc) might be around 1M lines, I think. Why does the orchestration/management layer, that is "databricks", exceed the sizes of the core products?

What an irony - the once European colonies which depended on their motherlands to defend them in an alien land, now become a menace or estranged godfather to Europe.

You want to be a child forever, amazed by your toys or the new things you can do. The toys won't let you grow up and become a normal human. You don't need take a dog for a walk, if you live in a normal place that allows dogs to roam freely. And you don't need to think about a "bunch of problems/ideas". Your mind is a servant of your body. And your body never asked you for that.

The human-ness is not about outcomes only. It is about doing things, thinking, achieving, socializing, sharing, bonding, feeling happy about what you did, using senses for what they evolved fir, recognizing and responding to body signals and being a biological creature. A lot of these is affected by AI.

I'm no longer writing code from scratch, as I used to do before. So, very soon, it will be "AI can now do X" makes it so I can't also do X? Same with many creative works. Radio music already sounds so plastic. I lost interest in crafting my text drafts because I can just dump some ugly text and get it refined by AI.

Most of what AI does is already in wrong direction. Not just human-to-human interaction, it took away thinking, creative work, sensory perception (glasses) and responses. People call it as helping humans, but I call it as sucking away the "human-ness" from humans.

After the damage is done, the mega corps would simply shrug and will say "Well, we were just responding to our business competition" The business knows no human-ness, because it is not a human. Businesses and machines are creatures that see humans as their fodder. And humans created these, assuming it is progress, to have businesses and machines. We call it progress because it required our mind power and it helped us to dominate other species. Dolphins are laughing at us.

This is true for any product in general. It is same as vendor lock-in in a sense, with the specialist team being the "vendor". Management never likes indispensable teams that limit their control over shuffling as they like.

Speaking of forcing employees work until midnight, in 1999, there were dotcom startups in San Francisco that used to pull down shutter in the evening to make employees work all-night. This was quite a common practice.

I put her in the league of Marissa Mayer (Yahoo), Rometty (IBM) and Jane (Citi) - all came with a mandate to revamp the whole thing.

Nobody got fired for IBM, but it took some battles for IBM to reach that level. Same with AI. Brand images won't develop until the street battles are over and dust settled. Otherwise, Google wouldn't have taken over Yahoo and ChatGPT would have remained the king. That didn't happen. The street fights are still raging in AI and won't settle down any time soon. Cost-concious usage can kick-out Anthropic overnight. Ultimately it's only the cost that matters and that will blunt all other factors, including security concerns and risk aversion etc.

Also, note that even the highly-regulated sectors invited opensource products and services and allowed data transfer across their network perimeter. That required "blunting" of the security policies, and it did happen.

Flashed my TP-LINK router last week with openwrt bin file, to get wifi to ethernet bridge. Working awesome.

There are too many settings. Feels like Gimp (vs paintbrush). But once figured out, it works well.

Irrespective of the high-flying language in the message, layoffs always mean only one thing: the management failed to envision their needs for staffing and skills, failed to have a roadmap that is sensible for at least a few years, and failed to redeploy the workforce. Basically they are saying - we have no clue about the work we do next year, no clue about the skills needed, no clue about how many people are required. But we do recruiting, so that we have people, just in case.

> he expects that the social media giant will begin to experience more significant benefits from its AI investments within the next three to six months.

He is hallucinating just like AI, and unable to come to terms with the facts on the ground. Meta has lost plot about 5 years back - with metaverse, VR, glasses and AI. They should sit back and think with a calm head, about what exactly their core product is. Unfortunately there is none, except a few acquired ones: whatsapp and instagram.

While personalization is definitely the trend, I don't think people are going to build code just to personalize. A tiny few of all who bought the device could do that. A few more could flash the device with some open firmware that gives more features and personalization and most will stick with the range of the personalization provided by the vendor.

For the most people, the risks outweigh the desire for tinkering. Personalization will grow right at the vendor offering, not in the hands of customer. People don't even have the time to cook their own recipes. People have their own chores to worry about. I'm talking about bulk of the customer base, not the geeks.
