Nope.

I get it, it's Apple and it's great and all that.

I'm just not going to wear that on my face.

I'm not.

This. I think HN leans very heavy on webdev and somehow forgets that the entire rest of the planet runs on software also.

I implement protocols to communicate with various hardware (RFID, LiDAR, etc). Most of these communicate over sockets. Some still use serial. I have a library I wrote of socket routines that I use, so it's not like I re-implement that every time, though. And for this, I'd really rather use my library than a 3rd party in case I have to dig in and see what's going on.

> ... and/or doing the right thing.

As long as it is ethical, doing the "right thing" is doing what you're paid to do. If that means, for example, ship code that you might not like or think is not perfect, that's fine. It's not your code.

Don't worry, if you're still coding at 50, you'll have learned that you are not your job. As Elsa says, Let it go.

> I'm sure we could do with more sex

I would disagree. I've a very healthy sex life, but I have always disliked watching sex. Watching it simply does not interest me one bit.

Assholes. Don't call it LoRA!

There's already a technology called LoRa!

Fuck I hate this crap. Be better than this.

> a lot of "clean" code isn't really that much clearer and more maintainable at all

Oh, it's not. Look at the crap the Java community used to produce. 37 levels of abstraction is not maintainable.

There is speed and there's the perception of speed. Some code (games) has to run fast. But most of the code we work on has to only have the perception of speed. If you're loading all of your resources and making the user stare at a twirly, you're doing it wrong.

Question, when FedEx says "Southwest Abort!" and then the controller tells them to turn right and Southwest says "negative" is that because they didn't have enough runway to do either?

> I don't think I will ever need 8K.

I won't need it until I can't buy anything else. 95% of the content I view on my 4K TV is 1080p. At living room distances, it's fine.

> I do think high frequency rate monitors are a gimmick...

Same. I don't scroll often enough to care. Or rather, I don't try reading and scrolling at the same time.

We'll break off into small communities and share information that way. It's how we did it with BBSs, IRC, etc...

Maybe, just maybe, the world will slow down a bit, then.

Likewise. And you're correct.

It's almost as if Musk and his "designers" have never seen a weigh/inspection station.

> sells poorly...

Relative to other iPhones, yes. I read that it accounts for 3% of iphone 13 (Pro, Pro Max, mini, standard) sales. The 13 line itself accounts for about 75% of sales. If Apple sold 40M phones per quarter, that 120M of the 13 line, so 3.6M of the 13 Mini. At 699, that's a 2.5BN business. Not too shabby.

Why is there no regulatory body reviewing software UI changes before they go live?

> Ubiquiti’s stock price has grown remarkably since the company’s breach disclosure Jan. 16. After a brief dip following the news, Ubiquiti’s shares have surged from $243 on Jan. 13 to $370 as of today.

Why? Coincidence?

Too many people saying, “I have nothing to hide.”

Also, people like “free” stuff.

There’s absolutely no upside for the consumer to buy into the subscription model if they’re not going to receive feature updates.

Security patches should be factored into the original cost of the app.

That’s messed up. What’s the point of a lifetime sub if you don’t get the features. I bet that’s how they sold it; that you’d get the new features.

Bait and switch laws still a thing?
