How does this work with consultants/contractors? Are they still booked under R&D expenses?

It's not about random short clips - imagine introducing a character like Mickey Mouse and reusing him everywhere with the same character - my guess is it's going to take a while until "transfer" like that will work reliably.

I know a lot of devs that would move to Barcelona in an instant but also know plenty of devs that hate London and don't want to move there despite a FB offer. Never understood why FB from all possibilities picked London - maybe British want to move there, but the rest of EU not.

> than when I had played with VR hardware for the first time

AR is 1-2 orders of magnitude more demanding than VR, so if we get to acceptable screen-door-effect-less VR on 30TFlops hardware, we might need like 1 Petaflop for the same with AR. That won't fit into a pocket anytime soon, but we can build such experiences on beefy demo rigs.

They have amazing software running on a supercomputer, but weren't able to fit it into a pocket (with their portable NVidia-based device). Maybe in 20 years?

Hooray, no notch! The only recent iPhone that is not ugly right now.

I worked on a transacted 20-60k messages/s system and am not sure K8S wouldn't be a hindrance there... Imagine writing Kafka using K8S and microservices.

That's what top schools teach you - conform 100% to the assignment requirements or there is no A/A+ for you. Also, most companies "get what they measure", so figuring out which metrics are visible and preferred is the way to go in large corps.

> The few women who moved to the Bay can have their pick.

I don't think so. It's only when males are desperate to settle; living alone and spending their money on their hobbies/travel might be a much more attractive option to them than to bind to an unattractive female that went to SFBA specifically to capture a high-value male.

My point was that had they initially released cloud based on what they had at the time, AWS would have had a very hard time competing. These days as you mentioned their competitors moved on and even K8S is surpassing Borg in some ways.

Google Cloud could have easily dominated the market if they were willing to share their internal technology instead of knock-offs they offered. Now it's too late, competition improved their mediocre offerings and outside TPUs there is no advantage anymore.

It happens also in own projects that are just huge, without any 3rd party libs.

Speed in large projects. IntelliJ is super slow once you have huge source/text files. E.g. WebStorm is unusable for debugging as one step over takes ~10s on a 128GB RAM machine in such cases.

Shop your code around; that you didn't find use for it doesn't mean somebody else isn't in need your code solves and could pay for it.

You can likely Hackintosh it with a 64 core Threadripper, WRX80 8-channel board, 4TB ECC LRDIMM and run circles around Mac Pro for half the price. Ryzen seems to work quite well with the latest macOS.

I can understand that the choice is more like:

1) auto-review with false positives/negatives

2) no review at all

Frankly, I don't have a solution outside an unrealistic one hiring external experts reviewing each submission which would probably deplete the pool of developers all around the world.

They don't know and can't really tell. ML fraud/flagging systems are opaque and non-interpretable. They can also change with each re-training that might happen daily.

Google:

REPEAT

We have suspended your AdSense account due to our ML system flagging you for fraud (yes, we trust it) and we can't tell you why (no, we really can't tell you even if we wanted to).

UNTIL customer goes away or the case gets enough upvotes on HN to be a PR problem

Amazon:

REPEAT

We have removed your seller privileges due to a change in our policies we didn't communicate to anyone and you likely selling a brand that was recently put on a gated list or our ML system is thinking you are a fraud because you logged in in private mode.

UNTIL customer goes away or hires a consulting company with ties to Amazon managers

Apple:

REPEAT

We have placed your account under review with opaque "policy violation" but we won't tell you why (like Google we can't tell as some of our ML models have good day flagging you for reasons known only to them). Or you might have tweeted something 5 years ago against a company we just acquired. Well, bad luck.

UNTIL developer goes away

FAANG customer service in a nutshell.

IMO it's better to read real-time Reddit threads when something is happening; it's usually unfiltered and you can get raw data, not the curated ones from mainstream news once propagandists from all sides plug in and offer only selective evidence.
