For me, what worked was switching to a new layout (QWERTY -> Colemak) which made looking down entirely useless. Tape a printout of the new layout to the top of your monitor for the first few days until you've got it, no matter how slowly you're typing, then go cold turkey. Some time later I went back to QWERTY in the office and was able to pick up touch-typing that layout without much thought or trouble; now I can jump back and forth between the two. Colemak feels a lot more ergonomic, too, as an added benefit.

Conversely, a low center of gravity and the superior emergency handling that it gives a car is also a huge plus.

It might. It depends on the status of the network at the time. If there is a significantly large unconfirmed transaction pool backlog and a transaction is made with a low enough fee then the miners may simply ignore the transaction for long enough that they let it expire and drop it completely. Theoretically, that transaction still could be confirmed at any time in the future, but, practically, it won't be. So, most wallet software will stop displaying an unconfirmed transaction after a number of days, returning to a pre-transaction available balance.
