People think they have it hard but have no inkling of struggle. The slight flattening of wages, that frame their 'epic' struggle, has brought hundreds of millions out of actual poverty. The default victimology mindset is quite unseemly. No understanding of how fortunate they were to be born in the West.
Daycare is insanely expensive and combined with the tax hit a spouse's modest extra income is nearly a wash, at least until the kids are in school. Having your children raised by strangers for a net $100/mo. extra does not seem worth it to me.
When Tocqueville (Democracy in America) came to the US in the 1830's it was to study prison reform for the French government. He wrote about an experiment at a youth reformatory that was run democratically by the inmates. No one ever lost their right to vote no matter what they did, but if you behaved you got two votes and could affect the outcome of decisions more. Apparently this worked very well.
I was a little upset when I was forced to take typing in junior high. Now I think I should send them a thank you letter as I watch everyone hunt and peck.
Pretending this is just an American problem actually benefits the US because the info sharing deals will continue uncontested as participating countries are given a pass. Never mind those military bases in Germany or the five eyes. The West is intertwined, hell the whole world is, but deceive yourself if you like.
