"The cause of the recent crash of flight ADZRUS-666 has been determined to be a badly scheduled ad impression which covered all screens in the glass cockpit to show aan ad of a dancing hippopotamus in a tutu selling skin care products while the plane was on final approach in IFR conditions."

Wikipedia lists whatever narrative the editors who have colonised that section of the site want to push. It is not a reliable source, this is something you learn in primary school.

Matrix is overly complicated for the purpose and XMPP/OMEMO already are interoperable between many different clients. Just like all other communication systems it is the network effect which makes them usable. Tell your friends to install a client of choice and - for those so inclined - run a server or create an account on one. Keep your current W/app or Telegram or whatever active for now while you slowly move more communications to XMPP. Once you have contact with most of your friends and family via XMPP make it your default wat to communicatie, i.e. do not start conversations over the legacy apps and answer those who contact you over them through XMPP. You'll find that you'll end up using those legacy apps less and less. Keep them active if you want but don't initiate conversations over them and you'll be set for the moment using those services becomes untenable.

This is not just fiction, it is what I have done and am still in the process of doing, in my case moving from Telegram - I never used nor will I ever use things which requires accounts run by metafacebook or Google or Microsoft or any of the others.

Conversations on Android and forks thereof are comparable to eg. W/app. This is not a problem, at all.

We're not there yet, by far. Should that ever happen it will be circumvented just like nearly all technological measures are.

Just run your own XMPP server in your own domain, use OMEMO for encryption and you're set. You can communicate with others on other servers, none of them 'publically available' and the TLA's can stare at all that encrypted gibberish 'till the cows come home. Even if they break into a single server they won't get access to the cleartext, for that they'll need to access the terminal devices - phones, browsers, etc.

This is how I've been communicating for years now, it works fine and does not feed any of the data parasites out there.

Gott ist tot! Gott bleibt tot! Und wir haben ihn getötet! Wie trösten wir uns, die Mörder aller Mörder? Das Heiligste und Mächtigste, was die Welt bisher besaß, es ist unter unseren Messern verblutet.

The average teenager who reads Nietzsches proclamation on the death of God thinks of this as an accomplishment, finally we got rid of those thousands of years old and thereby severely outdated ideas and rules. Somewhere along the march to maturity they may start to wonder whether that which has replaced those old rules and ideas were good replacements but most of them never come to the realisation that there were rebellious teenagers during all those centuries when the idea of a supreme being to which or whom even the mightiest were to answer to still held sway. Nietzsche saw the peril in letting go off that cultural safety valve and warned for what might come next.

We are currently living in the world he warned us about and for that I, atheist as I am, am partly responsible. The question to be answered here is whether it is possible to regain the benefits of the old order without getting back the obvious excesses, the abuse, the sanctimoniousness and all the other abuses of power and privilege which were responsible for turning people away from that path.

Somewhat off-topic but why oh why do nearly all app developers who have things on both Android as well as iOS insist on using an iPhone to show their app and also insist on saying the app is available 'on iOS and Android' instead of ordering these alphabetically? Does Apple give some incentive to do so or some punishment if it is done the other way around? This is a free app on both Android as well as iOS, it targets those who know what OSM is and as such feels like more of a fit for those running AOSP-derived distributions than closed-source walled-garden iOS yet still they advertise Apple-first. I realise that Apple is bigger than Android in the USA but the world is so much bigger than the USA and Android is so much bigger than Apple in most other locations. Android devices also offer more opportunities to show off the product with their bigger screens and less prominent or absent notches, so much so that seeing the Android version next to the iOS one - they show one Android device on the bottom of the screen, hidden behind an iPhone - makes the iOS version seem rather cramped and cluttered.

I can understand this when they're specifically advertising to the paying iOS crowd but it just seems out of place elsewhere.

In my experience this goes for most - for me actually 'all' but I don't tend to use much from the Play store - apps which insist on having Google Play services installed. They blatantly tell you to 'Enable Google Play services' because (e.g.) BankID won't work unless you enable Google Play services. Just click outside of the dialogue to make it disappear and use (e.g.) BankID as normal, it just works as it should.

Those prices... out of this world? Can you explain to me how it is possible to get a 7kW air/air heat pump installed for a total cost of ~17.000 [1] Swedish kronor (~$1600 at current rate) for a fraction of the price of these things? These devices all come with networked remote control, most of them can be integrated into 'home automation' systems without problems, they tend to work down to around -30°C (-21°F) albeit with lower efficiency (as will these devices). All that is 'missing' is the 'air quality' claim - although several of these heat pump manufacturers make claims about their devices filtering the air, using ionizers to 'increase air quality' and such. What remains is the Apple/Nest-like design and the claim of better integration with thermostats. To me this does not explain the factor 10 price difference, especially given that the Swedish prices include the high Swedish value added tax (25%) as well as the installation costs. What am I missing?

Given the way most of these politicised productions have been underperforming and sometimes even crashing this seems to be unlikely. It is not the market which demands this type of programming but more likely to be an outflow of the focus on ESG by certain investment companies which will eventually find out their investments tend to loose value if they insist on pushing a political agenda before profitability. These companies are not dealing with their own money so they hold a fiduciary duty towards their clients who are, by and large, not in it for pushing politics. Once their investments start tanking they'll start looking for someone to blame and sue which is when Blackrock, Vantage and the other investment companies pushing ESG will start to feel the heat.

The current wave of "self-identification" was markedly absent in the wake of the '68 revolts and the ensuing "free love generation" which casts doubt upon your thesis. It is far more likely that these current "self-identification" trends are emergent properties of the availability of direct one-to-many communications media - social media and the like - which make it possible for these identity groups to emerge and grow rapidly.

> OTOH, i am unsure what do you mean by a statistical over-representation of GD.

This is quite clear to me and I do not think gender dysphoria - which is a DSM-5 diagnosis [1] - is the correct term to use. Compared to previous years or decades (or centuries) there is a markedly higher percentage of children/young adults who "self-identify as 'trans'", often clustered and in waves. This did not use to be so but that does not mean similar phenomena did not occur, they just did not get a diagnosis attached to them. It is highly probable (and feed for a dissertation if there is a university which would accept such a politically charged project) that the same character types who now "self-identify as 'trans'" were those who would style themselves as "goth" or "emo" or (in the late 80's and 90's) "metrosexual" or any other androgynous style. The difference is that these earlier style figures did not come with a diagnosis nor were they adopted by any mainstream political movement and as such were taken less seriously. You could be a goth just like you could be a metalhead or a prep and be part of your in-crowd by just wearing the right clothes (and, for some crowds, make-up) and listening to the right bands. It was accepted as a way for children and young adults to "belong" without coming with much baggage.

Block all 3d-party content and you won't have any such problems. The site still works as intended. Use this as the default for uBlock Origin and you'll be spared many if not most of these obtrusive dark-patterned "consent" things.

When my devices - mostly ThinkPads of different vintage running Debian plus a 27" iMac running the same - sleep they don't wake up until I want them to so yes, "Linux" is better in this regard. If your device wakes up when it should sleep I'd check if Wake-on-Lan is enabled.

Those Floridians should just take a page out the Dutch play book on how to handle sea water incursions and start building those dikes. Average sea water rise around FL is about 2.5 mm/year so they still have some time.

When all fails they can just move to Yakutat, AK which sees a yearly sea water level drop of 15.5 mm/year. Any other place around Alaska will do since the sea water level goes down everywhere (or the land goes up which is part of the reason for the sea level drop).

If the US is no longer able to create nuclear power stations the reason for the failure is to be found in the regulatory overload, not in the technical ability. The solution therefore is to prune the regulators, not in building new gas-firing plants to replace nuclear power stations whose life can be extended while saving billions of dollars while keeping emissions at the same (very low) level as they've done since they were put on-line.

Here in Europe eyes seem to have been wrenched open and the resistance against nuclear power is being seen for what it is by many, a form of Luddism which is partly pushed by fossil fuel industries. Several countries - the Netherlands and the UK among them - are now planning to build new nuclear power stations. France seems to have been saved from the brink of switching their mostly nuclear power fleet to non-nuclear and is now planning to continue its reliance on nuclear power. Then there is Germany, the black sheep (probably due to it grazing next to a coal-fired power station) of Europe where 'die Grüne' (the Green party) and their ideological allies have managed to increase Germany's emissions substantially by forcing the closure of all nuclear power stations. Germany is one of the better examples on how not to manage power production and distribution.
