Also see notmuch [1] for a frontend-agnostic tagging/search system that also works great for multi-gigabyte maildirs. I use it with the Emacs client and lieer [2] for populating the maildir and syncing tags with Gmail labels using the Gmail API, which is a lot more reliable than offlineimap for me.

Which is also based on sup, because NM's creator found it to be slow and cumbersome.
Notmuch was inspired by sup, not based on it. The common component for sup, notmuch and mu is xapian.
I enjoyed reading the Philosophy [1] behind Sup, for the glimpse into how Gmail's immediate search feature changed how people use email clients, and how it inspired Sup.

Amazing. I made an "internet kiosk" 30 years ago using curses. Before (I had discovered the) graphical web.
