Maybe I’m in the minority, but I always prefer to switch to the native YouTube app instead of using Safari. Of course you can’t block the ads then.
Using Safari also lets you do background play with iOS's integration by un-pausing the video in the control menu once you exit Safari. Normally it's a premium feature. Fortunately, the quality difference doesn't affect this.
I just use newpipe honestly. All the goodies of YouTube (including background playback and PiP!) without all the ads
I wouldn't be surprised if Google somehow made YT's web version slow and annoying to use.

The comments mention a Safari extension called Vinegar, which fixes this and also provides Picture in Picture without YouTube premium. It is $2 in the App Store.
