Except my aunts are already on WhatsApp and I would have to get all of them on Signal. And then they would still need WhatsApp because of everyone else they talk to who isn't on Signal. The network effect is very real. On top of that we still don't know if Bill C-22 is going to require Signal to pull out of Canada entirely because of the metadata retention requirements. They don't keep metadata and that's something Canadian law enforcement has been pushing for for a long time.

I am forced to use AI as part of my job to write code. As a matter of fact, I was recently told that I'm not using enough AI according to their metrics, even though I'm producing good quality code on time. Since the cost is one of the things I'm being judged on, you're damn right I want to use the newest and most expensive model available.

How many of those can my elderly mother use to talk to her sisters? By my estimation the answer is, "zero," and the alternatives will get even scarcer thanks to Bill C-22.

This might be true in your country but it's absolutely incorrect in mine. Most of the telecoms here started as crown corporations, making them an arm of the government. Some of them have been privatized since then but they all received billions in subsidies to build out the networks to cover everyone and not just the most populated areas. An awful lot of Canadian taxpayer dollars have gone to build the internet in this country and we still get gouged like crazy.

Most of what I've heard is about the electric vehicles they produce, not the ICE cars. My understanding is their EVs are different beasts and much better.

I don't like using AI. I don't find it particularly helpful. But my employer insists that we use it and tracks metrics so I make sure to give it pointless busywork daily. That way I show as using it even if it causes more problems than it fixes.

I know a number of people with this view on Kia and Hyundai. "They were garbage back in 199X or 200X so they're still garbage now." Except that was twenty or thirty years ago and from what I've heard they made advances in design and quality since then.

There are large areas of British Columbia not at all suitable for farming due to lack of water, or mountains, but you still see cattle ranchers. On top of that, most of Alberta is classified as semi-arid because the Rockies block the vast majority of the rain. Alberta is easily the largest supplier of beef in the country. Crown land in both provinces gets opened up from spring until fall to allow for cattle grazing. It's fairly widespread in some parts of the world.

Not to mention you can't trust that the AI is actually filtering out applications properly. I've run into that myself when I was responsible for hiring at my last role. The AI solution my boss insisted we use was awful. It highly rated completely unqualified applicants and ignored the few good ones.

> I guess you want a Mac. That's fine.

Have you seen liquid glass? "Don't notice it's there" does not at all apply to the latest UI changes. Everything is bouncing and jumping and sliding in ways that deliberately call attention to itself. MacOS does not stay out of the way anymore.

It works well provided your needs are simple. I rely on a lot of features in LR that simply don't exist in any open source tool. Even a lot of closed source ones lack them. As much as I would like to move to something else I'm kind of stuck.

> Oh, there's one important detail here. The drop in the study was about 2 feet total, because the biplane and helicopter were parked.

I don't think that's making the argument you think it is.

I have the Shure TW2 adapters and they work great. No connection issues, great battery life, and the passive isolation I get with the right ear tips is better than any ANC I've ever used. As an added bonus, if you order when they're on sale, you can get the TW2 adapters with a pair of SE 215 buds for the same price as the plain adapters.

I also have a pair of these and they sound really good. Then I received a pair of the Shure Aonic 4s for Christmas one year and those sound amazing. As an added bonus, the passive noise isolation with proper fitting eartips beats any noise cancellation I've ever seen.

I would argue that vinyl sounds better thanks to the Loudness War[0]. CD is technically superior and should sound better but it's been compressed to hell and back during mastering in ways that vinyl simply can't be due to physical limitations. All that wonderful technology and they can't simply let it be so we get good sound quality.

At one of my previous jobs, we were acquired by a company whose CEO had been caught for something involving bank fraud and was under a gag order not to talk about it. As far as I know they're still in business.

How is it an insane take? My mother is in her seventies, has an iphone, and can't seem to figure out how to put me on speakerphone when I call her. It's a struggle to get her to do much of anything on there. My father is even worse. They didn't grow up with the technology like younger generations did and just don't get it.

RCS works perfectly on stock and I haven't had any random drops of the cell network since I switched back. I'm not saying it's bug-free, but those particular issues disappeared with stock compared to GOS. It could also be because I'm on a Pixel 10 Pro and they just haven't worked out all the issues yet. I plan to try again in a few months.

This experiment backs up what I've been saying in my social circle for a while now. Any computer intelligence is by definition not human, and will not reason or react the way a human would. If that doesn't scare the hell out of you then I don't know what to say.

I've found that your experience with GrapheneOS greatly depends on which country you're in and which mobile provider you use. I'm on Freedom Mobile in Canada and I had enough issues that I went back to stock. RCS didn't work at all, and my phone would regularly lose the cellular connection to the point I had to reboot the phone and reset the cellular network settings. I didn't feel like I could trust it in an emergency situation so I reverted. There are also times I'm out of cell coverage and having satellite SOS would be invaluable.

Some of these issues are known and some are just features the project won't support. Last I heard they aren't going to support satellite messaging at all.
