Oh we are on HN, just usually don't comment.

He had enough proof, his own students, who assumingly agreed. And in case the company still pretends there is no problem you could still crawl their entire user base...

Also consent.

Wait for the other person to do so willingly seems kinda good advice in many areas.

Making predictions on how it will turn out VS designing how it should be. Up til now, powerful people needed lots and lots of other humans to sustain their power&life. Thus that dependency gave the masses leverage. Now I'd like a society we're everyone is valued for being human and stuff. With democracies we got quite far in that direction. Attempts to go even further... Let's just say "didn't work out". And right now, especially in the US, the societal system seems to go back to "power" instead rules.

Yeah, I see a bleak future ahead. Guess that's life, after all.

phrom already mentioned the "old subscription-products die" aspect.

The other thing games tended to do, that is basically a subscription, was frequent, sometimes yearly, releases. You just buy this years iteration of fifa or CoD. Playing the latest "version" will on current hardware, just like a subscription. Compare that to Fortnite, where you don't have a choice but play the latest version (i heard they removed building?!? not that i liked it, but that's certainly a change!).

> My friend can use my RFID card too.

Yes, just like you and your friend can do a lot of other cheating in school. And the mechanism used to prevent that is severe punishments once caught by a teacher.

I don't see much difficulty in spotting an empty desk that should be occupied according to today's automatically generated seating chart.

On another note, I feel like I'd be more okay with facial recognition and other biometrics in the form of you going to a scanner and initiating a scan. But certainly not surveillance with recognition built on top. Article doesn't seem to specify what they used, though the image chosen implies surveillance.

That's hardly a stable solution. It would start out nicely, but some of them would start eating up the market due to network effects. Then turn evil...

If you make network effects harder (e.g. it extremely easy to submit apps to all of them), I don't see this not becoming a competition over price. And security is expensive. You'd have to prevent people search some nice apps on your store, then downloading the same on a different store with lots of shit tier apps as well, if it saves them your 30% tax.

It being their official sites gives those value / legitimacy and makes them even more okay to not kick them off. Kind of like there should be hardly anything the US president can do to get kicked off twitter.

You don't need a radical change. A lot of small, incremental changes can throw a system out of balance. Take fishing as example. Mankind is doing it since pretty much forever and made many small improvements on the way. Now in hindsight we might have the necessary knowledge, models and simulations to determine what precisely what made us exceed replenishment rates. But that doesn't really matter in retrospect and now we have regulation trying to prevent overfishing.

So yeah, if you are trying to argue nothing changed in our media usage and systems interact just like they did 50 years ago, then that is most certainly a loosing battle.

It isn't weak. Not sure how you look for new content. In my case it is yt.com/feed/subscriptions. If you leave i might follow. But only if enough content is on your new website to warrant me opening that tab a few times a week. Maybe also with content very on schedule. But you can be sure I wont do this with many sides, so you better switch to the same platform as anyone else.

Also maybe once or twice a week I actually follow one of YTs recommendations. I'm unlikely to do the same on platforms with significant less content. I'd expect others to behave the same and thus you'd probably loose a lot of advertising. Being big on a smaller platform has its own advantages, but I'm not sure this cancels out. And you have to be one of the top dogs in the first place...

I agree, but the fee should be a deposit placed by both parties willing to have a review, with the loosing side paying. Direct payments for reviews would create bad incentives to not improve their AI.

Or strait up go for external arbitrators. But "I'm willing to put money behind my words" seems like an easy signal against abusive mass claims.

Because you usually want to use the service that has the snapshot you want to view. And that isn't always archive.org. But it is my first place to go as well.

> So, unused button. Wish I could bind it to camera or something, no such luck.

The reddit thread about this story mentions an app "bxActions" that sees to be doing exactly that and might be worth a look: https://www.reddit.com/r/technology/comments/ae265u/samsung_...

Google will continue to have the upper hand in public image until stuff like that happens. Yes, this would be a PR challenge, but one MS might even be able to spin in a way they can benefit from...

You mean key->handle dict? Most environment variables on my windows seem to be what you are describing, except currently being path strings instead of file system handles.
