Also, his idea that "making something people want" precludes exploitation is naive at best. It's easier to make something that the masses want by exploiting people along the way. As a former bay area startup engineer, I saw this all the time...including in two different YC companies.
Why? They've already tried to mix mobile and desktop UIs with strange results. Gnome Shell has never been usable on touchscreens due to poor open source multitouch drivers. There aren't any well-known tablets or phones running Gnome, to my knowledge. Why keep going this direction?
1. Vague historical anecdotes are not quantitative evidence.
2. Existing biological evidence supports an inverse relationship between testosterone and tear production.
3. Stoicism is a sexual selection criterion found in human attraction research to be used by women, along with complexion, height, upper body strength, and facial symmetry.
4. Anecdotally, I find that men are often crying around friends. I find that they don't like crying around superiors. Additionally I, and many men who have compared notes, find that women in particular don't seem to like their SOs crying. That would seem to fit in with 3.
There are a number of glaring issues with this argument.
First of all, it's difficult to identify who the "bank robbers" were/are.
For example, I'm irish- my ancestors never owned slaves, and were frequently discriminated against, despite being "white". But being white, I still get lumped in with the bank robbers. Don't you dare tell me what money is or isn't mine based on the color of my skin.
Second, the bank robber analogy is a bit "sins of the father"-esque for me. That's a scary slippery slope. Should we make modern Germans pay Israel reparations, 70 years later? Should we promote Jews over Germans in Germany, to make up for the momentum lost? Or do we only help "struggling races"? And if so, who decides what is a struggling race? Isn't the entire idea of saying an entire race is struggling and needs (un)fair advantages a bit like the bigotry of incompetence?
Larry Sanger is one of the most abrasive, authoritarian people I've ever had the mispleasure of arguing with. He also tried to screw my friend Ben Kovitz out of credit for introducing Larry to the concept of wikis.
> I think you're right, and that the logical outcome should be poor company performance
Wait what? Quarterly company performance is not the only metric for acceptable corporate behavior. That's might makes right logic.
Steve Jobs created a hierarchy and corporate culture centered around him that couldn't really exist without him- a house of cards. Now it's eating Apple. Same issue.
It describes me perfectly. After being cheated by the DNC, I didn't vote for them as a "fuck you". I will continue to do this, possibly even vote for the opposition, for as long as you continue to treat me with disdain.
And thinking that this is a bit of a stretch is the disdain that I'm talking about.
Your analogy fails because you still have to prove that you were punched in the gut.
Even if sex occurred (bodily fluids were recovered), rape shouldn't be automatically assumed just because an accusation is made. Just like we can't assume you were punched in the gut just because you can show that your stomach is sore.
