This article seems a little biased as the two images shown for example - one flat and one with gradients and reflections are poorly picked.
The flat one is clearly a better designed one and the gradient/reflection one is a badly designed and there are better examples the writer of the article could've chosen, but I think they picked it on purpose to back up their subjective opinion.
