Living in lower NYC and being an avid snowboarded, there has been a profound difference in the snow season in the area over the past 10-15 years (I'm only 26) that I've noticed. 10 years ago, Hunter mountain would be covered with snow from mid December until mid March. With real snow or man made snow. But there was never an issue of opening the whole mountain due to lack of coverage. Now, we get the whole mountain for about 2 months per year, usually Jan and Feb. It's sad but it makes you re-think buying that $450 season pass that you really only get to use for a third of the normal season. Sure the mountains open, but it's not completely open and really kills some of the best parts.
Even going up to southern Vermont, you can see it. Mt. Snow is covered in ice. Okay, that's not a surprise, we call this the ice coast for a reason. No, there are massive sheets of JUST ICE all over. No glades. The groomers are slush. It's no bueno man.
Everyone has their reason for wanting to see a change in how we approach our climate. Snowboarding is freedom to me and the current climate is killing, literally killing, the industry over time. It's terrifying to me because I don't want to lose one of my favorite things in the world.
I'd like to just add a +1 to this. I had a tough time finding some good code examples and would love to see a small example of code in the readme. Something beyond a hello world, preferably but that's just me
My dad is good with computers and has a great online-bullshit radar. My mom and aunt are god awful though. My aunt fell for a 'virus scan' scam recently and the fallout was kind of rough to deal with. Full backup of photos & docs, new passwords, and a full factory reset of the computer. Not a fun weekend for her.
My rules for them:
1. If someone calls you from the bank, hang up and call them back from their phone number listed on their website.
2. If a pop-up comes up warning for viruses, call me immediately.
3. If a pop-up comes up warning about governments coming for you, call me immediately.
4. No one on Earth is going to try to give you money for free online.
I've had to answer plenty of calls about online bullshit, but I prefer that than having to try to deal with the Bank after they get scammed.
I'm not going to say much about OS's. I will say Elementary OS looks a bit like Mac OS. It's Ubuntu based, so you can get support all over the place. Not my cup of tea but I did start with it. It was nice looking and easy to use.
As for hardware. I always suggest Lenovo X, T, or P series laptops. I use a P52s. You can find one with just about whatever hardware specs you're looking for. Range from about $500 (USD) to $3000 on the high end, they are friendly to most budgets. I've never had a hardware issue myself, however, that is anecdotal. I've had an X220 for 6 years now that I use as an old game system emulator. It's never had an issue.
I have an external hard drive with some games and stuff to watch on it along with important contact and personal info. I also keep a copy of personal info on a USB drive, just in case. Less for the end of the world, more for if I get stuck and need to prove who I am or the wifi goes out during a storm. It's come in handy before
I feel like this can also be achieved with a Puppy Linux USB stick, a lightweight laptop, a charger, and a power source. If I'm around and able to make it, one of my laptops will probably be working too. That's just in a "lets be real" sense in my mind though. What do I know? I'd probably be dead pretty quickly
Fun sounding project though! I'll definitely try to install it on something at some point!
My book bags. I put a lot of though and time into finding the perfect setup. I have one that I use for daily commuting and hiking. I have another that I use as a shooting range bag and weekend/short trip bag. Both fit my needs perfectly and help to keep me organized without making me overthink what I'm doing with my stuff.
In the same sense, some projects never end because your PO/manager won't let you finish them. I've had a handful of projects that were supposed to make it at least to MVP phase that were just killed at the 60-70% mark.
QA testing is a pretty low barrier to entry gig. It's not exactly exciting work but it'll pay 50k+ per year and is a full time job usually (so benefits). The job will vary depending on where you go though. Some places will just need people to click around an app, other places will require some scripting/basic programming skills. It's just about finding the right company
So the criteria for this to work is that a word needs to be all of the following;
1. A proper noun representing a place (Buffalo, NY)
2. A verb (to buffalo, to bully or harass)
3. A noun whose plural is the same as it's singular (a buffalo, many buffalo)
The orange is yellow. Great color pallet though, it's really easy on the eyes for the most part.
I'm not that into frontend dev, I mostly stick with backend and devops so for me, when I need to make a front end without a ton of bells and whistles, this kind of stuff saves my no-css-skills-on-my-resume butt!
Your suggestion that large companies ought to be "bound by law" implies regulations by the government. Whether or not that is your intention is still up in the air. However, if the government owns the regulation then they get to set the standards of what a big company is on a per criteria basis.
If the government is being attacked by a specific 'group', the government will then have the power to impose specific, targeted regulations on that group's web presence. Without the legislation, this is a matter of freedom of speech and is quickly resolved by the first amendment. It would be incredibly difficult to fight that off.
However, with legislation in place that affords the government the power to impose such regulations, they can quickly and most importantly (read terrifyingly) silence people on the web.
