For Dropbox like stuff I use Nextcloud. Means I can select which files I want to download on my phone. For individual transfers of files a la airdrop I use Tailscale’s Taildrop

Surprised no one has mentioned the big difference in that you can copy paste from asciinema animations but not from a vhs gif. At least last I looked it was like that.

Got a second hand HP desktop with Ubuntu server (want to move to Debian at some point) all services etc are docker compose behind Caddy proxy. Connecting to a 2tb NAS. Running Jellyfin, freshrss, nextcloud, invidious, libreddit, Linkding, Firefoxsync, and vikunja.

I started self hosting recently. I bought a cheap desktop server and installed Ubuntu server on it. Every service I run is docker-compose because it’s easier than wrangling deps and such for multiple services. I use Caddy to proxy traffic and generate ssl certs.

I expose https and ssh through my router but use a non standard ssh port (keeps scripts and bots from knocking) and no root access over ssh and no password auth.

Everything runs very nicely and is simple to maintain and setup.

Data is backed up via Borg and rclone to B2.

So far so good as they say.

Thank you for this. A while ago I was doing a fair bit of Elixir in my spare time, so this has given me a reason to pick it up again. Going to give it a go myself

I still have it but rarely login and have unfollowed most “friends”. I don’t belong to any groups or anything, so it’s pretty boring. The main issue is the same messenger. Occasionally I get a message which I only see after a month or two, because I can’t seem to appear as “I don’t use this” mode. My wife asks me to keep the account so that a) her married status goes somewhere b) in case she needs to share something. I rarely see any posts to be fair and she will keep me updated on any relevant things happening. I don’t need to check for myself. I have a personal feed curator ;)

Had a few instagram accounts and deleted them all now as it just got boring after a while and nothing much of value. I had an account to enter competitions but with each one being “tag 4 friends” it was difficult as I generally just followed companies or people I didn’t feel like I could tag.

Had a twitter for a while but it became too much work trying to keep up with all the posts and eventually also tired of the same old content.

I use WhatsApp because of the network effect, as well as signal for another group of friends.

Never quite got mastodon or others of that ilk either as no one I know or wanted to follow is on those.

LinkedIn also had zero value and I ended up getting “friend requests” from my mum who I know doesn’t have an account. The dark patterns like this were enough for me to shut the door on that too.

People always complain why they can’t contact me on Facebook etc. I say you can call me, email me, WhatsApp, signal, SMS, or write me a letter. That should suffice. Really.

The iOS app scrolls to where you stopped reading last. This sealed the deal for me over raindrop.

I used to use pinboard[1] but since I started dicking around with self hosting I use Wallabag[2] for “read it later” articles and linkding [0] for saving links that I want to refer to later. Linkding is pretty much a self hosted pinboard

Funny how only Facebook is making these statements? I am sure that a multitude of other services (Dropbox, Twitter, etc) also require data transfer between Europe and the US. /s

Oh yeah, because they need the data to make money.

Aside from physical addiction, I find the mental side of addiction even harder to deal with. I tend to do X when Y and so each time I do Y I suddenly have an urge for X.

You’d have to have a look and see if there’s anything that triggers your desire to see if it’s the same for you and then try to change the routines a bit. The biggest help will be to just not have any in the house for a while. That will stop temptation and can help break the association of having X when doing Y after a while.

I’d also suggest looking up some advice online about tolerance breaks as well, as there are various tips that ought help you. Not everyone is the same, so you’ll have to shop around.

Plus a t-break will reset your sensitivity to THC which may also help reduce your intake post break.

Good luck

Could be nice for most individuals but I see the point about businesses. Especially smaller ones. Personally I would love to be able to see business opening hours without having to log I to Facebook, but it’s a “free” place to run your business site from.

> From it I ascertained that the first two questions one should ask are when encountering something in life are, "is this actually important?" and "is this a problem I can actually solve or make a meaningful difference in helping solve?" - anything one can answer "no" to either of those questions one should just let go of, and try to focus one's energies on other problems.

This is also a teaching of stoicism. Focus only on those things you can actually change and understand that your reaction to external things is under your control

“The chief task in life is simply this: to identify and separate matters so that I can say clearly to myself which are externals not under my control, and which have to do with the choices I actually control. Where then do I look for good and evil? Not to uncontrollable externals, but within myself to the choices that are my own…” – Epictetus

“If you are distressed by anything external, the pain is not due to the thing itself, but to your estimate of it; and this you have the power to revoke at any moment.” ― Marcus Aurelius
