A change in the protocol that requires the majority of miners to accept the change. There is no central authority, so they can not simply say "protocol x will be in place from August 1st". As in any community, not everybody agreed on the best course of action, so the outcome is not certain.

I think perhaps GitHub has already hired too many snowflakes who then couldn't handle such a communication style anymore.

For example the data scientist from the story who got offended about being lectured about transgender issues. Was it a man? In my mind I picture a sensitive SJW woman on her first job out of university, who was hired to increase diversity at GitHub. Sorry, that is just how it is...

It's true that Meritocracy alone overlooks the differences in opportunity people have starting out. Still, I think the criticism is somewhat misguided.

I like to think about Neurosurgery to illustrate: if you need a tumor removed from your brain, would you rather have the surgeon be a privileged, elite surgeon from Harvard, or some random dude from the streets?

We should be happy that we are able to produce elite Neurosurgeons, and strive to give more people the opportunity (including random dudes from the street). Attacking elite Neurosurgeons is completely counterproductive.
