We couldn't get people to wear masks to reduce the spread and help keep beds open for all the other typical needs, why would they let harm from fireworks impede them?

BitTorrent transfers files, so should a BT client be bolted on too? Typically the Unix philosophy has been do one thing well, not do all the things.

Sure, if those functions added were related to configuring network interfaces, but it would be odd if someone added functions for configuring storage controllers.

He could have finished the series long before the Game of Thrones adaptation was in full swing, much less the general availability of LLMs. I think the HBO money made him care a lot less about ASoIaF mainline and went back to editing Wild Cards and other projects.

Security Best Practices change all the time. Failing to implement MFA because "it takes time and energy" and "besides we implemented 12 character, complex passwords years ago" will not be valid excuses for government regulators when they come knocking.

Did you read the article to the end? It does bring speed ups for high resolution, like 4K. It's at more conventional laptop display sizes that its roughly on-par with, but the GPU scales better with pixel count.

It's not like those consultants recommended something the CEO and Board didn't want to hear. They are paid to be the shield that blocks the arrows from shareholders. If they can get paid twice, once to recommend laying off 350 engineers and again to later recommend refilling 350 engineers all the better.

A game that I get bored of in 20 hours versus a game I sink 200 hours into have provided different levels of entertainment value.

Even for books, a book that one enjoys reading so much that they return to multiple times is providing more entertainment value than one read once and given away.

Another way to consider it is to think of it in terms of entertainment value. The average movie runtime in the US is 114 minutes or 1.9 hours, and the average movie ticket is $11.50. This means I'm paying on average ~$6.05/hr to see a movie. Taking the cost of GTA at $80, then you would only need to play for ~13.2 hours to break even compared to watching movies in the theater. But if I played 100 hours, then I paid $0.80/hr to play the game.

>Prices should get cheaper. That's a progress dividend. We get better at growing food every year, why shouldn't food get cheaper?

This can only really happen if the rate of efficiency gains consistently out pace resource and labor costs, such that the marginal cost of delivering produce to market is flat or decreases for the farmer over time.

>most apps don't have any need to access the internet in the first place.

It would severely depend on how you categorize "most apps" because I would say I pretty much only use apps that need the Internet, barring Calculator, Camera, and a PDF reader (only because I prefer how it zooms books vs browser. Everything else implicitly needs the Internet as that app is just a better UI to using their mobile web site, if they even offer one.

Sure, if there's many paintings scattered around the house of various sizes, but if there's only one painting, in your office, behind the desk, mounted to cover a safe at standing height, then you might as well hang a neon sign saying "Look Here!" next to it.

>Why do problems caused by anti scientific behavior occur in a country like the United States, which has so many outstanding scientists?

Simple answer, consider the normal distribution bell curve, the more outstanding scientists we have, means the bell curve shifts up to cover the larger population, not to the right. So if the US has a longer tail on high end of scientific reasoning, it also requires a longer tail on the low end, too.

Another way to think about it, the world's 1st trillionaire isn't bringing the bottom up, if anything, it's very much doing the opposite.

> Meanwhile I can't use teams in our meeting rooms, since any form of internet access was deemed a security risk in rooms where customer projects could be discussed. This is in a day and age where 90% of customer meetings are done over the internet.

I hope this is in jest. Are you saying in order to discuss any customer project you have to book a meeting room? So no discussions of customer projects at the open plan desks or even in your boss' office for fear that something might overhear that conversation? Or is this only when the customer happens to be on-site to discuss their project? Does your organization assign U.S. Military style NICKA code names to everything?

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say if Canada wasn't willing to let Quebec leave, and they've tried with significantly more effort than Alberta ever has, then they're not going to let Alberta go.

So then by your arguments above, you're good with California leaving since they'd be a G6 nation on their own?

Because as you would might say: I'm sure this Canadian government would love to see an "independent" California.

Most of my physical junk mail is from local businesses like Eye Doctors, Dentists, or Trades, not National Brands unless its a local franchisee.

I mean yeah, who would rather spend time at their job helping other users figure out how to include the right add-in for Dropbox to work with their various apps vs how Office integrates with OneDrive or Google Mail, Sheets, et al. integrates with Drive? Thus adding another layer of software to manage updates, etc. At some point, there is an opportunity cost to using siloed products, especially for something that's become relatively commoditized like cloud storage.
